No one took it harder than Tara. She’d spent two years fawning over Katrina–how could she not be who she claimed to be? She’d always let people believe it.
“Tara, I—I’m not! I’m really not!” Katrina’s face was drained of all color.
But Tara, almost hysterical now, grabbed her arm. “That’s impossible! You get picked up in a luxury car every day after school–how could you not be?”
“I…” Katrina faltered. She couldn’t bring herself to admit that her father was just a driver for the Sawyer family, especially with classmates staring at her.
Even Chase was looking at her in disbelief.
When she stopped denying it, Jax let out a cold laugh. “So you are the Sawyer heiress after all. If that’s the case, a million should be nothing to you. Take her.”
“No–I’m not! I’m not from the Sawyer family!”
Two men seized her arms and started to drag her away. Only then did Chase snap out of it. He lunged forward and threw a punch, knocking one of them back, then pulled Katrina behind him.
“This is Mercer territory! Who said you could do whatever you want here?” he shouted. “We’ll pay what we owe. Now get out!”
At school, people might’ve backed off because he was the Mercer heir. But these men were debt collectors–thugs who didn’t care who he was.
To them, he was just a kid.
As they surrounded him, Jax sneered. “Beat him.”
The men rushed in.
Seeing it, Cecilia fainted on the spot.
The banquet hall descended into chaos.
In the confusion, Katrina broke free from Chase and ran out of the fray, afraid of getting caught up in it.

After Chase took several blows, hotel security finally rushed in from outside and went after the thugs.
Only then did the chaos begin to settle.
Nina watched it all with a cold, detached gaze. Chase lay unconscious on the ground, while Katrina had already fled in a panic.
“Nina?”
Jensen’s voice snapped her out of it.
She looked up to find a hint of concern in his deep–set eyes. “Did it scare you?”
“I’m fine.”
Seeing she was alright, Jensen lowered his voice. “Let’s home.”

Inside The Grand Sovereign, chaos had broken out. The damage alone–those smashed antiques–added up to at least a hundred thousand dollars. The champagne tower by itself had been worth a small fortune.
Nina glanced at Chase and Cecilia as security rushed them off to the hospital, a cold smile tugging at her lips.
Was that enough?
Not even close.
“I can’t believe that widow from the Mercer family is drowning in debt.”
“Serves her right. I’ve been saying for ages that the Mercers went bankrupt. We should keep our distance from them from now on.”
“And we all thought they’d latched onto the Sawyers–turns out it was all fake. They’ve completely humiliated themselves this time.”
The chatter rose and fell around them.
By then, Nina and Jensen were already in the car.
