“The Mercers are really in debt? Does that mean they’re bankrupt?”

He’d suffered a mild concussion from the beating the night before and had only just come to. Cecilia grabbed his arm anxiously and demanded, “Son, is it true? Katrina isn’t from the Sawyer family?”

“Mrs. Mercer, please calm down. The patient has just regained consciousness!”

A nurse tried to stop her, but Cecilia snapped, “Get lost! I’m talking to my son. This is none of your business!”

The nurse’s expression darkened. She was doing her job, not working as the Mercer family’s servant. “Mrs. Mercer, if you keep causing a scene, we’ll have you escorted out.”

“You-!”

Cecilia was about to lash out again when Chase stepped in. “I’m fine. I just want to speak with my mom. Could you give us a moment?”

His tone was polite enough that the nurse, though clearly displeased, turned and left the room.

Once they were alone, Cecilia fumed, “When it rains, it pours. Now even a nurse thinks she can boss me around!”

“Mom…”

Chase wasn’t sure what to think anymore.

Looking back, Katrina had never explicitly told him she was a Sawyer heiress. Every time he drove her home, though, she had him drop her off at the gates of the Sawyer family’s villa. And at school, she’d never corrected anyone when they assumed she was one.

After a pause, he said, “Even if she’s not a Sawyer, I still have to take responsibility for her.”

“What did you just say?”

Cecilia stared at him in disbelief, then slapped him across the face. “Responsibility? For what? Right now, your responsibility is to the Mercer family! Marrying Nina is the only sensible choice!”
