Nina stood off to the side. Jensen frowned slightly.

“We’re just guests tonight,” Nina said under her breath. “We’re here to watch. Don’t worry- they won’t hurt us.”
Jensen didn’t reply, but he quietly stepped in front of her, shielding her in case anything went
wrong.
Crash-!
The sharp sound of shattering glass rang through the hall, sending guests scrambling backward.
The intruders had already started smashing vases and champagne bottles with their sticks, wrecking everything in sight.
With more than a dozen men tearing the place apart, Cecilia went pale with fear, nearly losing her footing. Katrina ducked behind Chase, trembling.
As the only man of the Mercer family present, Chase had no choice but to step forward and shield them. His face darkened. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“What does it look like? Collecting a debt,” one of them sneered. “Your mother owes us a fortune. No money to pay it back, but plenty to throw a party in a place like this? Think we wouldn’t show up?”
The man leading them, Jax Stone, looked like a street thug, though the men behind him were clearly from a more organized operation.
Nina’s lips curved slightly.
In her previous life, it had happened the same way–on this exact day. Cecilia had thrown a lavish party during Chase’s birthday to celebrate her engagement to him, making sure everyone knew the Mercer family had secured ties with the Tann family.
But before the event could even get going, debt collectors had stormed in and wrecked the place.
That was when Nina learned about Cecilia’s gambling habit–she’d racked up hundreds of thousands in debt, and with interest, it had ballooned into the millions. The Mercer family had been too strapped for cash to cover it.

Recently, the family’s business debts had finally been cleared–but Cecilia’s gambling debt remained unpaid. No one had expected the collectors to show up tonight.
Back then, Cecilia had begged Nina for help, and Nina had foolishly stepped in, even paying off the debt herself–only to be humiliated in the process.
This time, Chase’s girlfriend was Katrina.
Which meant the burden would likely fall on her.
Sure enough, just like before, Cecilia hurriedly pulled Katrina forward. “Katrina, dear, please help me! Once this is over, I’ll arrange your engagement to Chase right away!”
Katrina had never seen anything like this. Her face was drained of color.
How could she possibly repay such a debt?
“Well, well–look at that,” Jax said, stepping closer. “A pretty little thing.”
Katrina’s features were delicate and pure, but her slender frame lacked any curves. One glance, and Jax lost interest.
“She–she’s the Sawyer family’s daughter!” Cecilia blurted out, panic–stricken. “Our future daughter–in–law. She can pay the debt!”
Ever since learning about the collectors‘ methods from Nina, Cecilia had been terrified of this
exact moment.
Katrina was shoved forward, her expression turning even paler.
“What? A Sawyer heiress?” Jax’s eyes lit up. “That’s worth something.”
He reached out to grab her arm.
“I–I’m not! I’m not from the Sawyer family!” Katrina cried, panicked, trying to pull away.
She was desperate to distance herself.
