Chase looked at her, his expression earnest despite everything, but she couldn’t bring herself to say. “I like you for who you are, not your background.”

He took her hand, his voice firm. “I’ve already told my mom–even if I have to give up being the Mercer heir, I’ll take responsibility for you.”

The faint smile on Katrina’s face froze the moment she heard that.

But Chase didn’t notice. He kept going, full of conviction. “I still have some money saved up. I can sell my car, and we’ll rent a place. We can live together. Once we graduate and get into college, I’ll take on part–time work. After I graduate, I’ll marry you.”

Listening to him lay out that future so sincerely, Katrina felt a flicker of panic.

If Chase gave up being the Mercer heir, then what was the point of being with him?

She quickly tried to stop him. “Chase, I think you’re being too impulsive. I don’t want you giving up your position as the Mercer heir for me. I—”

“Katrina, you don’t need to say anything else.” Chase cut her off, frowning slightly. “I’m not going back to the Mercer family, no matter what. Don’t worry–I can take care of you.”

Before she could finish, Chase’s expression shifted, suspicion creeping in. “Don’t tell me my mom was right–that you were only after my status as the Mercer heir?”

Katrina forced a smile. “Of course not. I just don’t want you to fall out with your family because of me.”

“If that’s all you’re worried about, then don’t be. I said I’d take responsibility for you, and I meant it.”

Chase looked completely serious, but Katrina couldn’t bring herself to smile. All she could think about was the $376,000 she owed Nina.

After a moment’s hesitation, she looked at him uneasily. “Chase… can I ask you for a favor?”

“What is it?”

“Could you… lend me $380,000?”

“$380,000?” He frowned. “What do you need that much for?”

It wasn’t a small amount, but it wasn’t impossible for him either. The problem was, most of his money was under Cecilia’s control. Getting that much out wouldn’t be easy.

That afternoon, Esther dropped Nina off. It didn’t take long before several classmates gathered around her, eager for answers.

“I’ve had my doubts for a while. What driver’s daughter gets picked up in luxury cars every day and gets invited by Mrs. Mercer?”

Some of Katrina’s closer friends still stood with Tara, but most of the class had already switched sides.

Outside the classroom, Chase stormed in with Katrina, both of them in casual clothes.

The moment Katrina saw Class A crowded around Nina, her face turned pale.

Fuming, Chase strode over, grabbed Nina by the wrist, and yanked her to her feet. Before he could say anything, Jensen stepped in, gripping Chase’s arm.

“Let go,” he said coldly.
