The moment Tara saw Katrina, she charged forward. “Katrina! Why did you lie to me?”

Her outburst threw the room into chaos.

Katrina shrank behind Chase, and he immediately spoke up, “The Mercer family isn’t bankrupt yet. If you’re thinking of getting physical, you’d better think twice.”

His words made the room fall silent.

Everyone knew the Mercer family was buried in debt–how could they possibly not be bankrupt?

Nina almost laughed to herself.

The Mercer family wasn’t bankrupt—at least, not yet. The people who caused trouble last night were only Cecilia’s personal creditors. It wasn’t even that much money. Cecilia just didn’t want

to pay.

These days, Mercer Group was barely staying afloat on funding from the Tann family. They couldn’t spare a cent more. At best, they were hanging on by a thread.

Whether the Mercer family collapsed or not, though, depended entirely on Nina.

Chase swept a cold glance over the room before fixing his eyes on her. “Nina, what’s this about $380,000? Explain yourself.”

“$380,000? You mean the $376,000 Katrina owes me.”

Nina immediately understood why he had come charging into school.

So this was about standing up for Katrina.

She had to admit, Chase’s feelings for Katrina were sincere. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t necessarily be said the other way around.

Chase looked at her with open disgust. “What kind of tricks did you use? Nina, I’m warning you–don’t try your cheap schemes on Katrina. She’s not like you. She’s innocent.”

Chapter 77 I Still Have The Iou

Nina let out a short laugh. “Love really does make people blind. Innocent? If she were so innocent, she wouldn’t have lied about being a Sawyer heiress. And I wouldn’t have lent her that much money to buy a dress.”

Chase froze. “What? A dress?”

“You didn’t know? Or did Katrina not bother to tell you?”

Nina blinked lightly. “The outfit she wore to your birthday banquet–she bought it with money she borrowed from me. I still have the IOU.”

As she spoke, Nina pulled a slip of paper from her pocket. Katrina’s thumbprint was clearly stamped on it.

When Chase reached out to grab it, Nina calmly handed it to Jensen instead. “Before you rush in here to defend your girlfriend, maybe you should get the full story. She chose to spend that much on a dress out of vanity. What does that have to do with me?”

“You…”

Chase opened his mouth to argue, but nothing came out. In the end, he could only turn back to Katrina.

Katrina kept her head down, too ashamed to look up. In a small, aggrieved voice, she said, “I… I just wanted to look nice at your birthday party… I’m sorry, Chase.”

Seeing her like that, Chase couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh.

Nina said calmly, “There are only three days left before the due date on that IOU. If Katrina can’t pay, I’ll have no choice but to take legal action to protect my rights.”

At the mention of legal action, Katrina’s face turned even paler.

The SATs were right around the corner. If Nina sued her now, what would that mean for her future?

It would leave a permanent stain.
