As she turned to leave, she added, “Oh, and I wish you and Katrina a lifetime of happiness- and lots of kids.”
Then she walked away without looking back.
Chase stood there, staring after her, silent.
Back in the car, Nina smiled faintly.
A lifetime of happiness, lots of kids… that had never been much of a blessing.
In her previous life, she’d given up her education because she got pregnant with Chase’s child. The Mercer family had used that to control her. In the end, there hadn’t even been a proper wedding–they’d rushed through the paperwork and called it a marriage.
Chase… since you’re so deeply in love with Katrina this time, then give up everything the Mercer family has.
Without your status as the heir, you’re nothing.
Without your education, you won’t have a future either.
And as for Katrina… Nina didn’t believe for a second that her feelings for Chase would last.
Monday, the school was buzzing with rumors–Tara had been attacked.
And not just anywhere–she’d been cornered in the alley on Friday, and all her money had been stolen.
Nina sat at her desk, frowning as she listened.
Friday? That was the same day Tara had fought with Katrina.
Her mind immediately jumped to the dress Chase had given her on Saturday.
“Nina?” Jensen’s voice pulled her back.
“Huh? What?” she asked, startled.
“I’m saying, it’s not safe after school lately. Don’t sneak out like last time.”
“I know… Didn’t you say someone’s been targeting students recently? Tara was attacked, right?”

Nina glanced around. “She doesn’t seem to be at school today either.”
Jensen frowned. “I don’t care about anyone else—I care about your safety.”

“It’ll be fine. Sam picks us up every night. Even if someone wanted to corner us, could they get onto school grounds?”
Hearing this, Jensen finally relaxed a little.
At the classroom door, Tara walked in wearing a mask, and everyone noticed her hair had been cut short.
First period was about to start, and it was clear Tara was late–but the teacher hadn’t mentioned anything earlier. She must have arrived on time and then been called to the office.
“Tara… what happened on Friday? What’s wrong with your face?”
Tara pressed her hands to her face, refusing to remove the mask.
“Did someone bully you? Why didn’t you call the police?”
“Yeah, Tara, tell us–we’ll stand up for you!”
After a few friends pressed her, Tara finally removed the mask, tears in her eyes. Beneath it, her face was shocking–swollen to the point where her features were barely recognizable.
Nina’s eyes darkened. “Oh my God… who would do this?”
“This is insane! Tara, you have to report this! You can’t let them get away with it!”
The students of Class A crowded around her. Tara’s tears kept falling as she sobbed, “Stop asking!”
She buried her face in her desk, crying.
Though usually domineering in class, Tara was generous and a top student, so she had plenty of friends. Seeing her unwilling to speak, they voiced their worry.
“But if they bullied you once, they’ll do it again. You have to report it, or it’ll only get worse!”
“Yeah, I think we should call the police too.”
They all spoke at once, but Tara didn’t answer a single word.
Nina frowned.

Girls getting slapped… that was a whole different level.
“Something on your mind?” Jensen asked.
“You guys, boys, fight with fists, right?” Nina said.
“Yeah,” Jensen replied.
“Well, girls‘ fights are pretty simple. Three moves: scratch, pull hair, slap.”
“So you think the person who hit Tara… was Katrina?” Jensen asked.

“You guessed it?” Nina raised an eyebrow, surprised at how quickly he had pieced it together.
Jensen looked away. “Just a wild guess.”
“I’m going to check on Class C after school,” Nina said.
“To see Hunter?”
“Why Hunter? Can’t I go see Katrina and Chase?”
