That afternoon, Katrina and Chase arrived at school. Class A was in the middle of PE when one student tugged at Tara’s sleeve. “Look! Katrina and Chase are here.”

On the playground, Tara’s face went pale the moment she saw them walking in hand in hand.

Nina caught the expression immediately. It was clear that Tara’s injuries outside of school were somehow connected to Katrina.

Charlotte Sterling, who had never liked Katrina, walked over to Nina. “See, Nina? She’s totally showing off for you.”

The girls in the class muttered envious remarks, but Nina just smiled.

The more Katrina flaunted, the happier Nina became.

In the past, Katrina could act so brazenly because of Chase’s family background. But now that Chase had cut ties with the Mercers, the school wouldn’t let them get away with such displays.

It didn’t take long for news to spread around school that Chase and Katrina had rented a place off–campus.

Standing by the window, Nina watched Chase pull up and drop Katrina off in full view of everyone. The smile on her face only deepened.

She knew exactly how much money Chase had–and how much the Mercer family had. The car was worth around six hundred thousand. Definitely high–end.

Now that Chase had cut ties with Cecilia, there was no way he could afford it on his own. Unless he’d taken valuables from the Mercer house when he left.

Either way, he’d just burned his last safety net.

This wasn’t a purchase he should’ve made. But Chase had grown up as the Mercer heir, used to spending without limits. And once he’d made a promise to Katrina, he was determined to keep it, no matter the cost.

Beside her, Charlotte frowned. “Has Chase lost his mind? Didn’t he already break away from the Mercers? How is he still buying something this expensive?”

“Buying a car is easy. Keeping it is the hard part,” Nina said calmly. “Maintenance alone on something like that costs a lot every year. Then there’s parking, insurance… fuel is the least of it. I guess Chase still has plenty of money.”

That’s what she said–but inwardly, she was already amused.

Back when he was the Mercer heir, he’d never paid for any of that himself. Of course, he had no idea how expensive it really was.

And Nina had also heard that Katrina was going around bragging about their new place–a hundred–square–meter apartment near the school. Rent, utilities, property fees… none of it came cheap.

Living like that, with monthly expenses in the tens of thousands, wouldn’t last long for them.

Deciding the timing was right, Nina took her phone out of her bag, stepped into the hallway, and called Preston.
