With so many people around her now, even if he wasn’t there in the future, she’d probably be just fine at school.
Nina took his hand. “Don’t worry. You’re my best friend–the only one.”
That evening, Chase hurried back to the Mercer house. The moment Cecilia saw him, she rushed over as if she’d found a lifeline, grabbing his arm tightly.
“Chase! You’re finally back. Think of something–quick! The Tann family wants us to repay all that money. Where am I supposed to find that kind of money?”
Seeing how panicked she was, Chase felt just as anxious. “Mom, let’s go to the Tann family and talk this through. We have to be able to buy some time.”
“Okay, okay!”
Cecilia clutched his arm and was about to head out when something occurred to her. “Chase, they’re doing this because of what happened between you and Nina. They’re taking revenge on us! The only way out is for you to make up with Nina. If you two reconcile, the Tann family won’t pursue this anymore.”
Chase’s expression darkened.
Cecilia tugged at his sleeve. “You foolish boy, why are you still thinking about Katrina? If the Mercer family falls, we’re finished! Are you really going to give up being the Mercer heir for a woman?”
That gave him pause.
“You’ve had the best of everything your whole life,” Cecilia went on, growing more agitated. “What is Katrina, really? Just a poor girl. She’s not even as pretty as Nina. What do you even see in her?”
The more she spoke, the more worked up she became, while Chase remained silent.
Was he supposed to give up Katrina for Nina?
After a moment’s hesitation, he said, “Mom, let’s go to the Tann family first and see what they say. Maybe… maybe there’s still some room to work things out.”
“What room is there? The house and cars are about to be auctioned off! And all my savings from half a lifetime–there’s no way I can just let that go!”

Chase’s thoughts were in a tangle, but in the end, he pulled Cecilia along and got into the car.
Outside the Tann family’s gate, the security guard looked Chase and Cecilia over with clear suspicion. “You again? What are you here for? Ms. Tann said she doesn’t want to see you.”
Cecilia, usually so proud, stepped forward this time with an ingratiating smile. “Sir, please- here’s a little something. We really do have something urgent. We need to speak with Mr. and Mrs. Tann.”
The guard glanced at the cash in their hands, then shot a look at someone behind him. After getting a nod in return, he relented. “Fine. You two can go in.”
He let them through. Cecilia’s face lit up as she grabbed Chase and hurried inside.
The Tann residence was far larger than the Mercer home. When Chase was younger, he used to come here all the time and never thought much of it. But now, stepping inside, he felt oddly out of place–like the threshold itself was too high for him to cross.
Maybe it was because he’d been living in that modest apartment with Katrina lately.
Cecilia walked in to find Marvin and Esther eating in the living room. The moment they saw the two of them, their expressions darkened.
“What are you doing here? Security!” Marvin called out.
Cecilia quickly cut in, “Mr. Tann, please don’t call them just yet. We came because we have something important to ask of you.”
“What could you possibly want now?” Esther’s tone was cold.
Cecilia glanced around before asking, “Um… where’s Nina? Is she upstairs?”
Right then, Nina came down from the second floor. She’d already anticipated that Cecilia and Chase would show up, so she’d made arrangements with the guard in advance–if they offered money, let them in.
The moment Cecilia saw her, her face broke into a wide smile. “Nina! You’ve gotten even thinner these past few days. Come here, let me take a look at you.”
She moved forward eagerly. Nina shot a quick glance at her parents. As expected, Esther slammed her fork down on the table, clearly displeased.
“Mrs. Mercer,” Esther said sharply, “what exactly do you want with my daughter?”
