“This was our house to begin with!” she cried. “What’s wrong with me going in to get my own things? How can you treat me like this?”

It was humiliating, but Chase couldn’t just leave her there. He stepped forward and helped her up. “Mom, let’s go home first.”

“You can’t go home.”

Nina’s words cut through the room, and Cecilia’s crying stopped cold.

“The Mercer villa was already sold to us,” Nina said evenly. “Everything inside was collateral to Tann Group, and I bought it all yesterday. Mrs. Mercer, you snuck into our home in broad daylight to steal. We’re not just letting that slide.”

Cecilia snapped back, “How can you say that? That was our house! What’s wrong with me going into my own home? You changed the locks, and now you’re accusing me?”

One of the officers rubbed his temples. “Whose name is on the property deed?”

Cecilia opened her mouth. “Of course it’s-”

“Mine.”

Nina’s answer was firm, leaving Cecilia so angry she could barely catch her breath.

Nina glanced at Preston beside her. “Preston, bring the property deed.”

She’d already told him to prepare everything on the way over.

Preston took out the documents and set them in front of the officer. He had finalized

everything the day before–the deed now clearly bore Nina’s name.

Only then did the officer turn to Cecilia. “You attempted to break in and steal. Since there was no actual loss, you’ll remain here for a warning and some formal admonishment.”

“But I-”

Cecilia swallowed her words, unable to argue.

Nina said calmly, “I’ll let this go this time. But if it happens again, I won’t be so lenient.”

She turned to Preston. “I’ll leave the rest to you.”

Preston stepped forward. “I’m the Tann family’s legal representative. If the Mercer family disputes this handling, they’re welcome to file a case in court…”

By the time Nina stepped out of the station, she couldn’t help but smile at what she heard behind her. In their current state, the Mercer family didn’t have the money to take something like this to court.

“Nina!”

Katrina had arrived at some point and marched straight up to her, bristling with indignation. “You’ve taken over the Mercer house. Mrs. Mercer just went in to get her own things, and you had her sent to the police? Don’t you think that’s too much?”

“Her things?” Nina’s tone was cool. “Everything in the Mercer house has already been bought by me. Katrina, if you’re going to stand up for your future mother–in–law, at least be reasonable. She broke into my home to take my things–of course she should be reported.”

Nina tilted her head slightly, as if puzzled. “Or are you saying you didn’t know the Mercer property was auctioned off to me?”

Katrina’s expression darkened.

She knew about the auction–but she hadn’t realized that every last asset of the Mercer family

had been sold off.

If that were true, then didn’t that mean the Mercers had nothing left at all?

Inside the police station, Chase came out and hurried over. “Katrina? What are you doing here?”

“I heard Mrs. Mercer was taken in, so I came to help.”

Watching the two of them together, all soft looks and quiet intimacy, made Nina’s stomach turn. She walked straight between them.
