“I hear you’re living together now,” Nina added with a faint smile. “Just wondering how long Chase’s bank account can keep that up.”
The smile on her face made Katrina’s heart lurch.
What did she mean by that?
By the time Nina got into her car, Katrina turned anxiously to Chase. “Chase… are we not going to be able to afford the place we’re living in?”
Chase didn’t answer right away.
He’d spent almost all his savings buying Katrina that luxury car, even selling off quite a few things to make it happen. There wasn’t much left in his account now–and the apartment they were renting cost six figures a month.
“We’ll figure out another place,” he said at last. “You should head back to school. I’ll come find you after I’m done here.”
“…Okay.”
Katrina still felt uneasy, but there was nothing else she could do for now. She’d go back to school and wait–then press Chase for answers once he was done.
Back at school, Jensen stayed in the classroom, waiting for Nina to return. The moment she walked in, heads popped up all over Class A.
Word had already spread–Chase’s mother had snuck into the villa Nina bought and tried to steal something.
“Nina, did Chase’s mom really break in to take money?” Charlotte asked, eyes full of curiosity.
“The police are handling it,” Nina said. “Nothing was actually lost, so it’s not a big deal.”
“Wow. Mrs. Mercer used to show up all decked out–and now she’s stealing?” Charlotte clicked her tongue in disbelief.
Nina just smiled and said nothing.
Cecilia had always cared about her reputation and appearance more than anything. After this, she probably wouldn’t dare show her face in public again.

“Oh, right—has Tara still not come to school today?” Nina asked.
It had been several days since she’d last seen her.

Ever since Tara got beaten up, she’d barely shown up. If this kept up, the school would likely call her and her parents in for a meeting.
“No idea. Probably sick again,” Charlotte said with a shrug.
No one in the class liked Tara anyway. She used to cling to Katrina, and now that Katrina had moved to Class C, there was even less reason for anyone to stick by her.
Nina thought about it for a moment. Just then, Jensen slid his notebook over to her.
“I wrote out the two problems from class,” he said. “If anything’s unclear, ask me.”
“Thanks—I knew you’d have my back.”
She’d missed two classes earlier, and in high school, every minute counted. Missing that time meant missing a lot of practice.
Jensen watched her for a second. “If there’s anything you don’t understand, tell me. I’ll write out the steps. That way, if you get stuck later, you can look back and practice a couple more times. You’ll feel a lot more confident during exams.”
Nina skimmed through his solutions. “What’s with you lately? If I don’t get something, I can just ask you.”
“…I just… don’t know if I’ll have many chances later.”
“Why wouldn’t you? We’re together every day.”
She pointed at one of the problems. “I don’t really get this one–what’s it asking?”
“I’ll walk you through it.”
