Chapter 10
MAYA
I just stood there for a second, shoulders sagging, staring at the door he’d disappeared through.
The room felt… wrong without him in it. Too quiet. Too big.

His scent still hung in the air-warm and woodsy, threaded with something my body recognized even if my brain refused to touch it. I breathed in slow, like I had to remember how breathing worked.
“So I’m really the Luma of that wolfish libertine?”
It came out on its own. And it was so absurd my knees actually gave out.
I sank onto the rug, a shaky laugh-more panic than humor-cathing in my throat.
“This is insane.”
I covered my face with both hands. My palms were hot. My skin was damp. My eyes squeezed shut like I could shut the whole world out with them.
My entire life. I’d imagined something else.
I’d pictured dying in that house-quiet and unwanted, scrubbing and serving until I turned into a ghost nobody bothered to look at. Or maybe, if fate ever decided to be kind, I’d run one day and start over somewhere no one knew my name..
In a way… I had run.
I just didn’t know if coming here was the smartest thing I’d ever one.
Or the biggest mistake of my life.
“I’m going to lose it.”
I tried to slow my breathing, but my body was still buzzing with him-his presence, his eyes, that deep voice, the word he’d used like it belonged to me.
Luna.
Not guest
Not charity case.
Luna
Like I was his.
Before I could even stand, a sharp knock snapped through the room.
My whole body locked.
I wiped my face with my sleeve and forced my eyes open just as Miss Langford appeared in the doorway, holding a ridiculous stack of perfectly folded linens like it was nothing.
She stopped when she saw me on the floor
“What are you doing down there?” she asked, in that tone older women somehow mastered-Irali curiosity, half judgment.

I shot to my feet like I’d been electrocuted, forcing a nervous smile while I rubbed the back of my burning neck.
“Nothing. I just… lost my balance and toppled over like an overre apple falling off a tree
The second it left my mouth, I wanted to bite my own tongue of
She didn’t laugh.
She didn’t even blink.
My smile died instantly.
She inhaled, her expression unreadable.
“Excuse me. I’m here to stock the closet.”
Then she walked in like I wasn’t even there and started lining the shelves with military precision. Every fold looked like it had been measured with a ruler.
I hovered by the doorframe, watching.
“All this?” I blurted. “That’s… a lot of sheets. I don’t even know ifm staying here that long.”
She didn’t bother looking up.
Mr. Volkov ordered your stay to be as comfortable as possible. I’m simply doing my job.”
Something twisted in my chest.
“Of course he did. I muttered, irritation slipping in. “The Alpha ays jump and everyone jumps.
1 let out a breathy, annoyed huff.
“He’s so full of himself. Just because he helped me once, he thinks I’m going to turn into some kind of property.”
That made her stop.
She set the linens down and turned slowly, her eyes sharpening ke blades.
I saw how you were treated in the Melrose house.”
Her arms folded.
“That family who claims to be yours treated you like a servant. You don’t want to go back there, do you?”
She took a step closer.
“And I highly doubt you have a single coin to pay for a roadside hotel
Her voice was clean and cutting
“Accept Mr. Volkov’s help, and don’t make choices you’ll regret. You have nowhere else to land-remember that
Her words hit like open-handed slaps
I crossed my arms tighter, forcing myself to stand tall even though my stomach had dropped somewhere near my feet.
I get it, but… you don’t have to talk to me like that, Miss.

She blinked slow
Like what?”
Like you’re trying to humiliate me.”
She inhaled, visibly reining herself back in.
“My apologies. Sometimes stubborn people get on my nerves.”
Her gaze swept over me, head to toe, like she was assessing damage.

“You’re brave, she said, and it almost sounded like an insult. “Bu you don’t think before you act. And you’re far too fragile. That combination drives me mad.”
I exhaled carefully, holding my pride together with my teeth.
“It’s just… I didn’t bring anything,” I admitted. “Not a change of clothes. Not shoes. Nothing. Everything happened so fast.”
One eyebrow lifted.
“That’s what you’re worried about?”
It’s one of the things, I thought.
But I only nodded.
She went back to the shelves like we hadn’t just ripped my entire life open in two minutes.
“Then it’s simple. Once I finish here, we’ll buy you new clothes.”
She glanced at me over her shoulder.
“And don’t worry about money. Everything goes on Alpha Atila’s account.”
My heart stuttered.
“Really?” I asked, way too fast. “There are… stores in Moonville?”
A faint smile tugged at her mouth.
“Of course. Not as many as on the other side of the portal, but enough little merchant shops for a young woman.
She closed the closet with practiced elegance.
“We’ll get a few things now. At the end of the week, when I cross he portal, we’ll buy the rest.”
My voice dropped again, uneasy.
“Won’t the Alpha mind… spending money on me?”
That finally earned me a real smile-small, but genuine.
“Why would he mind?”
Heat rushed to my cheeks.
She shook her head like I was exhausting.
