Chapter 109
– ÁTILA
Monday started like any other. At least on the surface.

I had two lectures to teach and a stack of articles waiting for review, but my mind wasn’t anywhere near a classroom. Maya left with me that morning, pretending nothing had changed. There was now a quiet army of armed men orbiting our lives- discreet, alert, always within range. Still, she insisted on keeping her routine. She went to her university classes. Afterward, she went to work at the café.
That bothered me more than I wanted to admit.
She didn’t have to work anymore. She didn’t have to count tips at the end of a shift or smile at rude customers. I could give her anything. Everything. But how was I supposed to say that without crushing her pride?
I finished my last lecture late in the afternoon. Dismissed the students. Waited until the room emptied before packing my things. That’s when something slipped from my briefcase and hit the floor with a dull thud. The small velvet box slid a few inches before stopping near the desk.
I stared at it a second too long.
I bent down, opened it, and the diamond caught the fluorescent light overhead. I’d bought that ring days ago—an impulse that wasn’t an impulse at all. It was certainty. The most solid one I’d ever felt.
“I need to do this soon,” I muttered to myself.
I closed the box carefully and slipped it into the inner pocket of my coat, feeling its weight against my chest as I left the building. A plainclothes guard walked me to the parking lot. I got into the back seat, the leather cold beneath my hands.
“Home, sir?” the driver asked through the rearview mirror.
I considered it.
“No. I’m stopping somewhere first.”
The car pulled away in silence. When we parked across the street from the café, I told him to kill the headlights. I sat there, watching through the lit glass doors. Warm yellow light wrapped around Maya as she took orders, scribbled on notepads, smiled that soft smile of hers.
I leaned my head back and watched her work. The city darkened around us, shop windows reflecting streetlight glow, and I stayed there. She wiped tables, organized the counter, laughed at something Beatrice said. Time passed without me noticing. I only realized how late it was when the interior lights began shutting off one by one.
I looked up and saw the full moon slicing through the clouds.
The cafe door opened, and Maya stepped out beside Beatrice, laughing about something. I got out of the car before I could overthink it, shut the door, and walked toward them.
She saw me and her eyes widened just a little.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, surprised but smiling.
“I came to get you.”
“What? You knew where I worked?” She stepped closer and pinched my arm. “You’re not stalking me, are you?”
Her gaze flicked toward the subtle convoy of cars lining the street and then back to me.

“A friend of yours mentioned it,” I said smoothly. “And I’m just doing my job. Making sure nothing interferes with our plans.”
Behind her, Beatrice raised her hands in surrender. “I’ll leave the lovebirds alone. Bye. I’m heading out.”
“Beatrice-” Maya tried, but her friend was already halfway down the sidewalk.
She turned back to me.
“So?” I asked. “Ready? I guarantee tonight will be perfect. I planned everything.”
“Okay. But I need a hot shower and to change.”
