We went to a floating restaurant on the Thames. The river reflected the city lights like a restless mirror, and at that hour the dining room was quieter. We ate slowly. Talked about small things. Laughed at nothing. I watched her more than I ate.
After dessert, she sighed, eyes shining.
“I feel like I’m in a fairy tale. A poor girl dating a ridiculously handsome, absurdly rich man, having dinner on the Thames. If I’m dreaming. I don’t want to wake up.”
The corner of my mouth lifted before I could stop it. Her happiness did that to me.
I paid the bill and we stepped outside. We walked hand in hand through nearly empty streets.
“I need to tell you something,” she said suddenly.
“What is it?”
She took a breath. “I got news. Actually… it’s something I was considering before I met you.”
“About what?”
“I was selected for a semester at the Sorbonne. I stay enrolled in London. The credits transfer. It’s six months. I keep my scholarship, and there’s European funding too.” She exhaled slowly. “But the Sorbonne is in Paris.”
I was quiet for a few seconds.
“Have you decided?”
“No. It’s always been my dream to live in Paris, even just for a while. But that was before you. Now…”
“Don’t rush the decision,” I said. “Paris isn’t that far from London. And it’s only six months.”
“You’re sure you won’t be upset?”
I stepped closer, pressed my forehead to hers, and kissed her softly.
“If it’s your dream, I’m the first one who wants to see you live it.”
She smiled and kissed me again.
I glanced at my watch.
We needed to move.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“I still have a surprise.”
I laced my fingers through hers and pulled her along before she could ask anything else. Our footsteps echoed on the stone pavement, her heels clicking in rhythm with my pace. The night wind cut across our faces, making her laugh as she tried to keep up. City lights shimmered in glass façades, and as we walked, the towering silhouette rose ahead of us, dominating the skyline like an ancient guardian of time.
The streets were nearly empty when we reached the base of Big Ben. The tower stood above us, golden and imposing under the full moon, as if it held every secret the city had ever known. We went up. The metallic sound of the gears echoed around

us-a colossal mechanism marking time with ruthless precision. The ticking vibrated in the air, deep, almost physical, like an ancient heart beating inside stone walls. Up there, the sky was a dark velvet sheet cut by the full moon, and London stretched below like a sea of lights pulsing in the night.
She stepped closer to the glass, mesmerized.
“This is unreal,” she whispered.
I took the box from my pocket.
“Maya.”
She turned.
I went down on one knee.
For a second, the world went silent.
She gasped before I could speak. “Oh my God… what is that ring? Why is that diamond so big? I thought-you were just going to ask me to be your girlfriend.”
“I don’t see the point in asking you to be my girlfriend when I already know what I want. I want you by my side. In London. In Paris. Anywhere. Marry me.”
She blinked several times, mouth slightly open.
Her hands trembled when I held out the ring.
“You’re insane,” she whispered, laughing nervously. “This is happening so fast it actually scares me… but I… I say yes.”
The silence after her “yes” felt suspended in the air-heavy and sacred at the same time.
I stood slowly, cupping her face. She was still trembling, eyes glassy, nervous laughter breaking through in disbelieving
bursts.
“I’m going to make you the happiest woman in the world,” I said, like I was signing a contract with fate itself.
She smiled in that way that stripped every layer of armor off me.
“You already are,” she said, tugging on my lapel.
Her mouth met mine urgently. Not delicate. Hot. Breathless. Almost laughing between gasps. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her against me, feeling her body fit mine like it had always belonged there. The cold ring brushed my finger as her hand slid up my neck, like she still needed proof it was real.
She pulled back slightly, breathing hard, lips flushed, eyes bright.
“You’re completely crazy,” she murmured, smiling.
“And you’re marrying me anyway.”
“I am,” she confirmed, resting her forehead against mine.
We laughed. I kissed her again, slower this time, like I wanted to carve the moment into her skin.
Then I felt her change.
Subtle at first.

She blinked a few times, forehead still pressed to mine. Her breathing, fast from the kiss, turned uneven. The laughter faded from her lips.
She stepped back.
“Maya?”
She looked at her hand. At the ring. The diamond’s light reflected in her pupils.
