Maya lay deeply asleep on the hospital bed, wires and monitors blinking in a steady rhythm while I stood beside her, watching every tiny detail like I might catch some hidden sign she’d come back any second. The constant beeping of the heart monitor should’ve calmed me. It didn’t. Every sound only drove home the same truth-she was here, and somehow impossibly far away. Her face looked peaceful. Almost serene. Like she was just resting after a long day. But I knew better. This wasn’t sleep.

The security team was stationed outside, quiet and efficient as always. They’d gotten her out of the tower in seconds and straight here. If I’d been even a minute later… I shut my eyes briefly. No. There was no point going there.

The door swung open without warning. Beatrice rushed in first, pale, eyes wide. Cassian followed close behind, more serious than usual.

She went straight to the bed, took Maya’s hand, then looked at me.

“What happened?”

“She collapsed at Big Ben,” I said. “Started saying things that didn’t make sense. Then she just… passed out.”

Beatrice frowned, confused. Cassian opened his mouth to ask something, but the doctor walked in before he could.

“I’m Dr. Harrington. Who’s responsible for the patient?”

“I am. I’m her boyfriend.”

He studied me for a second.

“No family present?”

Beatrice answered before I could.

-She hasn’t been in contact with her family for years, Doctor. You can speak freely. We’re the closest thing she has.”

The doctor took a measured breath.

“She suffered a severe seizure. From what we can tell, it was triggered by intense emotional overload. What’s unusual is that there’s no significant brain injury. No trauma. No structural abnormalities that explain her current condition.”

“What does that mean?” Cassian asked.

“It means she’s entered a spontaneous coma. Her brain appears to have shut down as a defense mechanism. Almost as if it’s refusing to respond. It’s too early to draw final conclusions. We’ll need to monitor her closely.”

I understood every word Dr. Harrington said-and the hesitation behind the polished medical tone. He was looking for answers in scans and charts. He wouldn’t find them there. After everything I’d seen and learned, it was obvious to me this wasn’t something modern medicine could neatly categorize.

“Did she experience any significant emotional event in the past few hours?” he added.

I hesitated for exactly one second.

“I proposed.”

The silence that followed felt heavy enough to crack the walls. Cassian looked away. Beatrice blinked rapidly.

Dr. Harrington nodded slowly.

“That could’ve been the trigger. For now, her body is stable. We’re waiting on neurological response.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I said.

He left, and the room felt colder than before.

“What are we going to do?” Cassian asked.

I didn’t take my eyes off her.

“I’m going back to Moonville. I need to find old Wilfred.”

“You can’t go back there, Átila.”

“And just stand here doing nothing?” I growled, frustration climbing up my throat like fire.

“I’ll go myself,” I continued. “I’ll gather Silas and Kael and head to Hollow Creek. Stay here with them. I’ll be back in five days. Max.”

I clenched my fist hard. Rage. At myself. At my helplessness.

But Cassian was right. I wasn’t the Supreme Alpha who could bend reality to his will anymore. After the deal with the Moon Goddess, crossing the portal could cause more damage than good.

I stepped closer to the bed and brushed my fingers gently over her face.

“I’m supposed to protect you from everything,” I murmured.

Beatrice came closer, eyes glassy.

“When you proposed… do you think it made her remember something?”

“Maybe,” I said. “She was speaking in fragments. Like she was seeing something that wasn’t there. It’s possible a memory came back. I just don’t know if it hit her so hard she decided she’d rather not wake up.”

No one said another word. We just stood there, staring at her, like the weight of our silence might pull her back to us.

– Fifteen days later –

I finally got authorization to bring her home. I couldn’t stand that sterile white room anymore. The apartment had been converted into a private ICU-discreet equipment, rotating staff, everything money could buy.

I laid her carefully in the bed, adjusting wires and sensors around her.

Miss Langford paced restlessly in the hallway. Beatrice had gone to rest. I hadn’t left Maya’s side for a single second in fifteen days.

Fifteen.

Cassian had said five.

The doctors kept repeating there was no logical explanation. Her brain was functional. Just… asleep.

The doorbell rang, and Miss Langford hurried downstairs.

Cassian entered the bedroom first. Kael followed, no usual grin on his face. And then Wilfred.

“What took you so long?” I demanded.

Cassian dragged a hand down his face.

“Long story. I’ll explain later.”

Before I could answer, I felt another presence. Victoria appeared in the hallway.

“What is she doing here?” I snarled.

Cassian shrugged. “Told you. Long story, brother.”

Victoria leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, that same superior air. I didn’t waste energy on her. I focused on what mattered.

Wilfred approached the bed. He studied Maya for long seconds, then closed his eyes and took her hand.

“She’s in a deep sleep,” he murmured.

Kael muttered under his breath, “Pretty sure we all figured that out.”

Cassian and I shot him a look. He raised his hands and shut up.

Wilfred lifted his staff. The air in the room seemed to hum. A subtle tremor ran through the objects around us. He hovered his hand over her head and slowly drew something out-something almost invisible. A thin, luminous thread. Neon green. Fragile and alive, like electricity.

His eyes stayed closed.

“Her mind is overloaded with memories.”

“What does that mean?” I asked, my voice barely holding back a growl.

“It means everything returned at once. Her entire past. The young man who sought me out in Hollow Creek told me about her life these past few years. I imagine she needs time to sort through it internally.”

“So she’ll wake up on her own?”

“Exactly.”

I thought about that and muttered, “That makes sense. Her brain tried to protect her. Now it’s trying to restore itself.”

I drew in a slow breath.

“When she wakes up… will she remember everything?”

Wilfred considered that.

“It’s very likely most of her memories will return. But it must happen naturally. Interfering could harm her body.”

I looked down at Maya.

If she woke up remembering everything-who I’d been, what I’d done, the decisions I’d made believing they were necessary. If she remembered what she learned about her family. The lies. The fire.

That could change everything.

I stepped closer and took her hand, feeling the warmth of her skin under my fingers while I sensed everyone watching from around the room. I didn’t care.

I leaned down until my lips nearly brushed her forehead and whispered low enough for it to belong only to us:

“Come back to me however you are. Broken. Furious. Full of questions. I’ll answer every one. Just don’t stay trapped somewhere I can’t reach you. Don’t leave me here without you. Just come back. I don’t like you this quiet. Bring your scars with you. I’ll kiss every single one.”
