The side of the farm was darker. Quieter. The sound of hooves faded into the distance until there was nothing but our footsteps in the dirt.
Maya stopped beside a low fence and turned to face me, still holding the horse’s lead rope too tightly. Her fingers were pale against the leather.
I stopped a step away.
Close enough to see her breathing-fast, shallow, like she was holding herself together by sheer force.
“How was the rest of the party?” I asked.
She let out a short laugh, empty of joy.
“You came all the way here to talk about last night!”
I ran my tongue along my teeth, swallowing the irritation clawing at my throat
“Actually, I came to get you.” I didn’t flinch. “I spoke with Stone. I’m willing to take you back home.”
Her body reacted instantly. Her eyes snapped up, sharp as blades, and her hand tightened on the rope like it was a weapon.
“I’m sorry-what?”
“You heard me.” I took a slow step forward. “I’m here to take you. Whether you want to come or not.”
Her breath hitched. She stepped closer, challenging me.
“You dragged me through a portal and now you think you get to control me?”
“You’re under my custody,” I said flatly. No softness. No apology. “It’s my responsibility to keep you safe in this world. And not working in stables on some farm surrounded by men.”
“I’m working because I want to.” She came closer, almost on her toes, voice low and cutting. “Is that really so hard for you to understand?”
I bit down on my lip, hard, and my gaze dropped to her mouth without permission.
The way she spoke to me like I was the problem-like I was just some man.
Like she hadn’t moaned my name last night.
Like I hadn’t felt her body shudder when my tongue touched her where she was most sensitive.
1 lifted my eyes back to her face.
“Your place is by my side. Maya
She smiled-pure sarcasm, like I’d told her a joke.
“Is it!” Her head tilted. Funny: That’s not what it looked like when you left me standing there alone last night.”

Chapter 60
Her hand shot out, landing on my chest in a quick shove.
It didn’t hurt.
But the intent?
That hit like a blade.
Then she turned and started walking away.
I followed.
“So you were upset?” I asked, because I needed to hear her admit it. Just once.
She didn’t stop.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“Wait.” I quickened my pace, caught up to her, and stepped in front of her, forcing her to stop.
She lifted her face, eyes shining too brightly-and I saw it.
The tears held back at the edge, stubborn, refusing to fall.

“What do you want from me?” Her voice cracked, but she didn’t back away. “Answer me. Honestly. What do you expect from me?”
I stepped closer.
“Because ever since we met, everything you do is push me away.” My jaw locked. “But then you get angry when I ignore you?” I stared at her, relentless. “I need to know, Maya. What do you want from me?”
She went silent for a beat.
And in that silence, I felt her trembling.
Her scent warmed.
Sweetened.
She blinked slowly, and one single tear clung to her lower lash line like it couldn’t decide whether to fall.
“I don’t know what I want from you.” Her voice was low, breaking in the middle. “But I know what I want from life.”
She tightened her grip on the rope like it was the only thing keeping her brave,
“I want real love.” She swallowed hard. “I want to feel it-genuinely. I don’t want to be… dragged by a force I never chose. I don’t want to be treated like I’m something you have a right to just because destiny decided it.”
Her words cut straight through me.
Because I understood.
And at the same time, I hated that I did.
I dragged a hand over the back of my neck, breathing heavy, fighting not to let pride win.

Chapter 60
“How do I prove it?” I asked.
She laughed, bitter.
“Honestly?”
“Honestly.” My voice went rough. “Be brutally honest, Maya.”
She took a breath like she was about to say the hardest thing in the world.
“By respecting my choices. And letting me work here.”
I closed my eyes for a second.
The wolf inside me snarled, furious.
But I opened them again.

And when I spoke, my voice came out lower, controlled-like every word was forced through clenched teeth.
“Okay.” I nodded slowly. “Fine. I respect your choice.”
Maya froze, like she didn’t believe me.
I stepped back.
‘I won’t bother you anymore,” I said, gentle in a way that still felt dangerous. “Stay here. On the Stones’ farm. So… goodbye.”
I turned away and started walking.
Halfway down the path, I stopped.
Because I felt it.
Her stare burning into my back. Her standing there, frozen, holding the horse like it was the last shred of control she had
eft.
I turned.
And there she was.
