I stepped into the shower and let the hot water pound against my shoulders. Steam rose fast, sealing the space, turning the world into nothing but heat and breath. For a few seconds, I tried to shut everything out.
Didn’t work.
The memory of us in that cabin slammed into me without warning-raw, reckless, out of control.
“D-don’t stop. I’m close.”
A low growl tore from my chest as I shut my eyes. Insolent. Sweet. Reckless down to the bone. And goddamn irresistible.
My body reacted before my head could catch up. The water slid over my skin, making everything worse-better. I braced one hand against the tile, breath turning rough as the image of her burned behind my eyelids.
Her face. Those wide eyes lifted in challenge. That mouth-parted, daring, knowing exactly what she was doing to me.
“Fuck…” I muttered, forehead dropping against the cold tile.
The steam closed in, thick and heavy, but it was her that set me on fire. Her on her knees. Her
locked on mine.

My breathing broke apart. Control slipped. When release hit, it was fast and unforgiving, leaving me shaking, chest heaving, the rush fading under the steady drum of water down the drain.
I stayed there a moment longer, head bowed, body still humming.
Damn it.
I finished washing and shut off the water.
Outside the shower, I grabbed a towel and scrubbed it through my hair, hard. The mirror was fogged over-but my thoughts were crystal clear.
It had been a full day since I’d last seen her,
Too damn long.
She belonged here. With me. The way the moon belongs to the sky.
I clicked my tongue in irritation. Why did she have to be so stubborn?

The thought twisted into something sharper. Hotter.
Funny how that only made me want her more.

Another thought followed, uninvited but dangerous. What if I asked her to marry me? Would she say yes-and finally come back under my
roof?
I dressed quickly and headed for the sitting room.
And stopped short.
Beatrice was there-standing near Miss Langford. Seeing her alone put my instincts on edge immediately.
“What’s going on?”
“Alpha Átila…” Beatrice said my name, and something in her expression tightened my chest before the words even landed. “Maya is gone.”
“What?” The word came out hard. Sharp. “What do you mean, gone?”
“She slept in the staff quarters last night. When I woke up, she was already gone. I searched the entire farm, went into town, and came here to see if she’d spoken to you-but your housekeeper said she never showed up. Please… I’m really starting to worry.”
