I woke up with my head pounding, like it had been crushed from the inside. My body felt heavy, unresponsive. Everything hurt.
“Is she still alive?”
The voice reached me muffled and distant, cutting through the fog in my mind. I tried to move my hand.
I couldn’t.
Someone leaned in too close.
I forced my eyes open and found Freida’s face inches from mine. Her eyes went wide, and she screamed like she’d seen a ghost.
“Shit! She woke up!”
Before I could process anything, Elizabeth rushed in and shoved Freida aside.
“Get out of my way!”
The room spun. The ceiling felt too low. The walls too close. There was a strange weight on my right arm-something attached to my skin.
Elizabeth was fiddling with my hand, focused. I blinked hard, trying to see clearly.
“Where are we?” I asked, my voice barely holding.
“In the basement,” she said, smiling.
The smile froze my blood.
My head lolled to the side, too weak to stay upright. That’s when I saw it. A needle was buried in the vein on the back of my right hand. A clear tube ran from it, carrying a thick, yellowish liquid slowly

“What is that?” Panic crept in, cold and sharp.
I tried to pull my hand away, but Elizabeth grabbed it and yanked it back toward her. I was too weak to fight her.
“Stay still,” she snapped. “This gives you a fast, peaceful death. Nothing shows up in your system. No suspicion. You’ll be far away soon. In the afterlife.”

“Relax.” Her voice turned almost gentle. “It’s already in your bloodstream. You’ll fall asleep soon, little sister. Forever.”
“No… damn it… no…” I whispered, my strength draining fast.
The room tilted. Voices blurred together. The world pulled away, like I was sinking into dark water.
My life flashed through my mind in broken fragments. A quiet childhood. Learning how not to exist so I wouldn’t bother anyone. A lonely adolescence full of fear and waiting.
And then him.
Átila.
His face came into focus-strong, serious. The only person who ever made me feel seen. Protected. For the first time in my life, I knew what it meant to be truly loved.
A bitter rage ripped through my chest. He was the only thing still tying me to life. And I had thrown that away the moment I let my anger win and came back to this house of narcissists.
I gathered the last of my strength and spoke.
“He won’t let this go.”
Elizabeth stared at me.
“What did you say?”
I forced my eyes open, dragged in a breath, and spoke with everything I had left.
“I know him. You can kill me, but he’ll come for every one of you. One by one. And he’ll make you pay.”
“How dare you-”
Josephine stepped into view. Her face was bruised purple from the beating I’d given her. She held a cloth with ice against a cut on her forehead.
Before she could speak, a loud noise echoed from upstairs. Someone pounding hard on the front door.
Freida’s eyes widened.
“I think someone’s at the door.”
“It’s probably Dad,” Margot said weakly from the corner.

‘Your father is out of town,” Josephine replied coldly. “I’ll answer it. Whoever it is.”

Freida rushed to the small basement window-the one level with the front lawn. One glance was enough. All the color drained from her face.

The Supreme Alpha.”

A weak laugh slipped out of me. They all turned to look at me.

Look at you,” she sneered. “Barely alive. Either way, I win. I’ve accepted my fate. But you won’t last nother ten minutes, Maya.”
‘He’ll find me,” I murmured. “And when he does, he’ll kill you.”
‘No,” she said, standing up. “He won’t even find your body, sweetheart. Know why? Because there won’t be anything left.”
‘What?”
osephine began rummaging through the basement cabinets. Freida asked, panicked, “What are you doing, Mom?”
‘All of you, get out. Now. Go to the living room and wait until I call you.”
“What?”
‘Now!”
