The Rejected Luna (Avery and Kaden) novel Chapter 140

Gordon owned two energetic huskies that seemed to have a personal vendetta against his furniture and belongings. Every morning, without fail, he had to rise early to take them out—one at a time—because their combined strength was more than he could manage. Countless times, he had been yanked off his feet and dragged across the pavement, yet those wild walks had sculpted his body into a lean, toned frame. His life was a whirlwind of chaos, a blend of maddening destruction and endearing companionship.

As Gordon swiped his key card to unlock the suite door, I was still chuckling softly. “When we get back, I definitely want to meet your dogs,” I said with a grin. “Once I have my own place and some money, I’m going to get a dog and spoil it rotten.” The thought of having a loyal pet to dote on made me smile warmly.

Gordon was about to respond with a lighthearted remark, but then his face abruptly stiffened. He straightened his posture, his playful demeanor replaced by a serious tone. “Mr. Lancaster,” he said quietly.

Curious, I followed Gordon inside and spotted Steven seated on the living room sofa. He held a glass of water in one hand and a cigarette in the other, his legs casually crossed. His usually pale complexion had a faint flush, but his sharp gaze swept over both of us with an intensity that felt almost piercing. The atmosphere grew heavy with unspoken tension.

My smile faded as I sensed the shift in mood. I overheard Steven’s low voice, laced with an edge of reproach: “Gordon, why didn’t you answer your phone?”

Gordon’s jaw tightened. He carefully set down my bags and pulled out his phone. “I’m sorry, Mr. Lancaster. My phone died. Did you need something?”

Steven remained silent for a moment before turning his attention to me. “Was your phone dead too?”

I glanced at my screen and saw eight missed calls. They must have come through while Gordon and I were returning, distracted by our conversation about his dogs. “It was on silent. I didn’t hear it,” I admitted.

Steven’s handsome face grew even colder, his expression unreadable. He didn’t say another word, but the tension in the room thickened. Gordon, clearly uneasy, said, “If there’s nothing else, Mr. Lancaster, I’ll go arrange dinner.” Without waiting for a reply, he practically rushed out of the room.
