I should have stayed out of it, just to protect myself. But if I let him drag Verna away, I knew exactly what would happen to her.
Steven was on his way. He’d heard everything. I just had to stall until he arrived.
I lunged forward and grabbed Verna’s other hand, pulling her toward me.
“Wait. She’s my friend, not some helpless doctor wandering alone. If you want this deal to go through, if you want to enter the domestic market, you will let her go right now! This is a small problem, but it will become a very big one if Aether Studio gets involved.”
Verna looked at me, stunned. Hugo froze, his eyes narrowing as he stared at me.
I sensed an opening. He hadn’t touched me, likely because I was Somania and representing Aether Studio. Verna, on the other hand, looked like an easy target.
But then Verna grabbed a wine bottle from a nearby table and smashed it over his head.
“Mrs. Lancaster, don’t waste your breath! Run!”
With a deafening crash, the bottle shattered!
Werna grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door. I was caught off guard, my phone flying From my grasp. Hugo staggered, blood trickling down his head. He saw my phone on the floor, still on an active call, and his face contorted with rage.
He stomped on my phone, crushing it, his eyes blazing with fury as he stared at me.
“You were playing me!”
A chill ran down my spine. Verna had just opened the door, but before we could escape, Hugo grabbed a fistful of my hair and slammed me against the edge of a table.
hit the corner with a sickening thud and collapsed to the floor, a wave of agony shooting through my body. My wrist screamed in protest, and I couldn’t get up.
Jerna’s face went white. “Mrs. Lancaster–Ah!”
looked up just in time to see him throw Verna to the ground. He kicked her hard in the stomach twice, and she cried out in pain. He loomed over her, tearing the shoulder of her dress, exposing her pale, delicate skin to the air.
Verna’s mind snapped. “Get off me!”
He seemed to have lost all patience. He picked up the jagged neck of the broken bottle and prought it down hard on her head.
The sound of the impact sent a tremor through my entire body. It all happened in a matter of seconds, too fast for me to even react. Blood streamed from Verna’s head, and she went limp, unconscious.

The sight sent my blood running cold. An Icy dread spread from my heart through my entire body.
“Did you kill her?”
No, I could see the faint rise and fall of her chest. She had just passed out
Hugo’s eyes, like those of a viper cornering its prey, fixed on me. He advanced, the jagged, broken bottle clutched in his hand, a sinister smile on his face.
“You know, I never planned to hurt her like this. I was going to take her home tonight, be gentle with her. But she just wouldn’t listen, forced my hand right here.”
“You’re just like her–so beautiful. Especially you. You have this indescribable, sensual beauty. You’d be incredible in bed. But I never touch famous people; it’s too much trouble to clean up afterward. I was trying to restrain myself, but since you insisted on helping her, you can both come home with me!”
