Chapter 148
Hugo, his face bruised and swollen, flinched at the director’s words. He glanced at Verna, and under the crushing weight of Steven’s dual assault, he finally broke.
“I was wrong, Mr. Lancaster! I shouldn’t have been blinded by lust. I shouldn’t have touched her. I swear, I didn’t know she was your woman! If I had known, I would have died before I laid a finger on her!”
“But I didn’t touch her–not really. I didn’t defile her. And I didn’t touch your designer either. You’ve beaten me up, so we’re even. I won’t say a word about this. Lucid Works needs to enter the domestic market. Please, don’t ruin us!”
listened as they switched back and forth between languages, only able to understand Hugo’s pleas.
So that was it. The reason Lucid Works failed to enter the market in my past life was because Steven had intervened.
And now, for Verna’s sake, he was doing it again–sacrificing a multi–billion–dollar contract and crippling a century–old family business, all for her.
History was repeating itself.
A strange, complicated feeling washed over me. I had traveled thousands of miles, schmoozed with strangers, and stayed up all night studying their designs to land this deal, only for Steven o tear it all down in a fit of rage for another woman. And while a part of me was glad to see it happen…
felt a familiar, degrading sense of worthlessness, just like in my past life.
A series of agonized screams snapped me back to the present. I looked up to see Steven’s black leather shoe planted firmly on Hugo’s crotch, grinding down with sickening force.
My blood ran cold. “Steven…”
A blow like that would leave him crippled for life.
Was he really willing to go that far for Verna?
He didn’t let up until Hugo’s face had turned ashen and he’d passed out. Then, Steven stepped pack with a look of disgust.
How could you?!” the project director shrieked, his own face pale with terror. But he didn’t dare confront Steven, instead rushing to Hugo’s side and trying to drag him away. “Young master,
oung master, wake up! I’m taking you to the hospital…”
Once they were gone, Gordon hurried to Verna’s side. “Mr. Lancaster, Ms. Garcia seems to be seriously injured. I’ve already called for an ambulance, but we should get her to the hospital
now.”
Steven glanced at me, his eyes lingering on my swollen cheek. His long, elegant fingers gently

brushed against my skin, his gaze deep and unreadable.
“Besides your face, are you hurt anywhere else?”
I shook my head. The impact with the table had hurt, but the pain had subsided. “No. Your Verna is the one who’s seriously hurt.”
His brow twitched almost imperceptibly. “Then come with us.”
He took off his jacket and draped it over Verna’s torn clothes, then scooped her up into his arms and strode out of the room.
Gordon and I followed behind. He leaned in and whispered, “Ma’am, Mr. Lancaster was terrified when you called. I’m so glad you’re okay.”
He means he’s glad Verna is okay,* I thought.
I listened in silence, a bitter, self–mocking smile touching my lips.
If I had known this was just a repeat of history, that Steven was destined to save Verna, I would have stayed out of it. All I got for my trouble was a beating and a whole lot of terror.
Verna was rushed into emergency surgery. Gordon stood guard outside while Steven stayed with me in the ER. The doctor said they needed to treat my face first before running any other
tests.
My wrist had taken the brunt of the fall. It didn’t hurt anymore, but it was still tender to the touch, so I readily agreed.
‘Thank you, doctor.”
Steven stood off to the side. “I’ll take you back to the hotel after your check–up.”
