Uncle Julian and Horace stared at me, their mouths agape. They had both wanted to defend me, but I had unleashed such a verbal onslaught that they couldn’t get a word In. Mary was completely eviscerated.
She looked as if she was about to faint, her hand trembling as she pointed a finger at me, unable to form a single word.
I guessed she had never heard me speak so crudely. In our previous confrontations, I had always maintained a certain level of decorum.
But my policy was to match the energy I was given.
She had come after my frail, defenseless uncle. I had to repay her in kind, with interest.
Horace was the first to recover. He started clapping, a wide grin on his face, his eyes cold as he looked at Mary.
“Did you hear that, old woman? You have to earn respect to be called an elder. You barge in here, throwing around words like ‘tramp‘ and ‘lover,‘ making baseless accusations. It’s despicable. Go home and learn some basic human decency.”
Julian’s breathing evened out, a look of satisfaction on his face as he glared at Mary.
“The Lancaster family, is it? How dare you bully my girl like this. You just wait!”
“No, you wait! A common stray can crow all it wants, it’s still a stray. You’re dirt poor and you dare to challenge me? How laughable,” Mary spat, her eyes blazing with hatred as she glared at me. “Zephyra, I will make Steven divorce you. A woman with no culture, no manners, who disrespects her elders–you are not fit to be a Lancaster!”
Mary stormed out in a huff. I wasn’t angry at all, just filled with a cold, detached amusement.
As if I cared about being a Lancaster. It was just a rich family… well, a very powerful rich family, with all the perks that came with it. But none of it was mine to control, so it was no great loss.
Suddenly, I felt two sharp gazes on me. I turned to see Uncle Julian and Horace staring at me with serious expressions.
My stomach fluttered nervously. “What is it?”
Uncle Julian’s eyes were fixed on me, his voice heavy.
“Zephyra, when I asked you why you were getting a divorce, you said it was just a small disagreement, that it was an arranged marriage without love. After seeing this, I want you to
tell me the truth. Have the Lancasters been bullying you?”

Chapter 155
Horace’s eyes were also filled with a deep, nching sympathy.
I pressed my lips together. Memories of the past and present flooded my mind: the Lancasters‘ harsh criticism, the bullying, Steven’s cold indifference, his betrayal, I had made peace with it all when I died in my past life, but the memories still left a bitter taste in my mouth, a chill in my heart.
I forced a smile. “Not all of them. Grandpa Marico has been very good to me. He’s always looked out for me.”
Julian stared at me, his lips trembling. His weathered face was etched with self–reproach and guilt, his eyes red–rimmed.
“It’s my fault. I should have found you sooner. You and your mother… you’ve suffered so much. But not anymore. Uncle Julian is here now. I will protect you.”
Uncle Julian had a stern face, and his thick beard made him look almost intimidating. But his words, his eyes–they melted the ice around my heart.
When you’re being bullied, all you want is someone to have your back. In my past life, I had been completely alone. Hearing these words now, after everything… I couldn’t hold back the
