The Rejected Luna (Avery and Kaden) novel Chapter 157

Gordon appeared a bit uneasy, his brow slightly furrowed as he carefully selected his words. “Mr. Lancaster is currently in a meeting. Would you prefer to wait in the lounge?”

I nodded, settling into a plush chair in the waiting area, the soft fabric enveloping me like a comforting embrace.

A few moments later, Gordon returned, balancing a steaming cup of coffee in his hands. “Ma’am, may I ask why you left so abruptly the other day? Mr. Lancaster was searching for you everywhere. He was quite distressed.”

I raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. “Distressed about what?”

Inwardly, I mused that perhaps he was merely irritated by my sudden departure with Horace. Why would he be worried?

Gordon’s expression shifted to one of concern.

“Lucid Works has some influence in the area, and we were unable to reach you. Your phone was switched off, your messages went unanswered, and you weren’t at the hotel. I’ve never seen Mr. Lancaster in such a state of agitation. His face was… it was genuinely terrifying.”

I felt a pang of surprise. I hadn’t realized he had been so frantic. Yet, I shrugged it off with a casual “Oh” and took a sip of my coffee, the rich aroma filling my senses.

It must have been quite a challenge for him, juggling the search for me while also looking after Verna.

“I heard those two from Lucid Works are behind bars now. Was it due to Verna’s trauma?”

Gordon rubbed the bridge of his nose, a gesture that hinted at his own stress.

“Ms. Garcia’s condition is quite serious. She suffered a head injury, and the trauma has left her in a very unstable state. I couldn’t manage her on my own, so I had to call Mr. Lancaster back.”

“But Mr. Lancaster went after Lucid Works for you, not for Ms. Garcia,” I pointed out, my expression conveying a mix of disbelief and amusement. I smiled sweetly, adding a playful note to my words.

“Are you joking?”

Gordon met my gaze with unwavering seriousness.

“Ma’am, on the day you and Ms. Garcia were attacked, didn’t you notice how intensely focused Mr. Lancaster was on you? He confronted them for your sake. You know how sharp his tongue can be, yet he rarely resorts to physical confrontation. That day, he nearly beat the young master of Lucid Works to a pulp. He even left him crippled. Who else would he act so fiercely for?”

I couldn’t help but admire Gordon’s loyalty to Steven. It took a certain skill to weave such a narrative.

Steven had initially shown little interest in me. It was only after I revealed the extent of Verna’s injuries that he exploded with rage.
