The Rejected Luna (Avery and Kaden) novel Chapter 163

**Between the Wings of Twilight Lies the Memory of You**
by Liren Ava Roen

Calvin’s voice was insistent, almost pleading as he spoke through the phone. “Just hear me out for a moment. You’re stuck in this situation with him, and honestly, he’s not the worst. Why not try to make it work? Remember how you used to adore him? What’s really holding you back from rekindling that love? If you allow yourself to fall for him again, things might not feel so insurmountable.”

He paused, letting his words sink in before continuing, “But if you’re truly set on leaving, then go ahead and be as irritating as you can. Cling to him, be needy. Trust me, men can’t stand that. Maybe after a while, he’ll be so fed up with you that he’ll finally agree to a divorce…”

A heavy silence enveloped me as I absorbed his advice. My heart was a storm of conflicting emotions, and with a tight expression, I ended the call, my finger hovering over the “end” button like it was a lifeline.

After that, I reached out to every lawyer I could think of, my desperation palpable. Each one initially responded with enthusiasm, eager to take on my case. Yet, as soon as I uttered Steven’s name, their demeanor shifted. They began to stutter, weaving excuses and trying to dissuade me from pursuing the divorce. It became painfully obvious that they were intimidated by Steven’s influence and power, unwilling to challenge him.

My grip on the phone tightened, a surge of fury igniting within me. “Steven, you bastard!” I hissed, the words barely containing the rage bubbling beneath the surface.

I was on the verge of calling him to unleash my pent-up frustration, but then it struck me—I had blocked him. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, I attempted to calm my racing heart. If Steven were standing before me at that very moment, I might have lost all control.

Eventually, as I made my way toward the hospital, I dialed Rachel’s number, my mind racing with thoughts of escape.

“Rachel, do you happen to know any lawyers with serious connections? Ideally, someone who isn’t intimidated by wealthy clients. I need some recommendations. I want to file for divorce,” I said, urgency lacing my voice.

The shock in Rachel’s response was evident. “A divorce lawsuit? I thought Steven had agreed to it. What happened?”

What was going on in that man’s mind? According to the timeline of my previous life, this was the moment he should have been coming to terms with his feelings for Verna. My request for a divorce should have brought him relief, not resistance. I hadn’t done anything to alter his feelings for her, so why was the outcome so drastically different this time?

Unless… something had gone awry. Something had disrupted the timeline. But who could have possibly intervened? Aside from those directly involved, no one had the power to change the course of events. Surely, Steven hadn’t taken it upon himself to alter his own fate, had he?

My thoughts spiraled into chaos. I bit my lip, frustration gnawing at me. “It’s a long story. The short version is that a negotiated divorce is no longer an option. I need funds immediately, and I have to win this case. Can you help me? Please?”

“Absolutely, don’t panic,” Rachel assured me, her tone quick and reassuring. “I’ll ask around. Just hang tight for my call.”
