**Between the Wings of Twilight Lies the Memory of You**
by Liren Ava Roen
Jacob fell silent for a moment, his gaze dropping to the floor as if he were searching for the right words among the scattered dust.
“Actually,” he began, his voice barely above a whisper, “we had a fight just before she left. She was really upset with me because I had to work late and couldn’t take her to the airport. Since then, she hasn’t really spoken to me at all. It’s like she has this ritual of giving me the silent treatment whenever we argue. It usually stretches on for at least two weeks. When she was here, I could just swing by her school and smooth things over, but now that she’s across the ocean…”
The weight of his words hung in the air, and I turned to face him, my heart sinking at the sight of his turmoil.
Although I couldn’t see his face clearly, the tension radiating from him was palpable. I could sense the worry etched into his features, the fear lurking just beneath the surface.
He hastily wiped his eyes, his voice thick with suppressed emotion. “The flight itself takes two days, which means I’d need to take at least five days off from work. I just started my internship; HR would never approve that. And the plane tickets? They’re ridiculously expensive… I feel so helpless. I can’t go see her, and she won’t even pick up my calls. So, I had to swallow my pride and ask you for help.”
Every word that escaped his lips was infused with the depth of his love for Verna, mixed with the frustration of an ordinary person caught in a web of circumstance.
My heart twisted in response, a tumultuous mix of emotions swirling within me. I had wanted to remain uninvolved in their drama; after all, my focus was solely on securing my divorce from Steven. That was my priority. But now, it became painfully clear that I couldn’t simply look away.
Previously, my understanding was limited to how much Steven loved Verna. I was even aware that during his next trip abroad, he would try to insert himself into her life, whether she wanted him there or not.
But now, as I looked at Jacob, his raw and heartfelt affection for Verna struck me like a lightning bolt. He was not just a character in a story; he was a real person with genuine feelings. To see someone so deeply in love, so utterly crushed by Steven’s interference, was a tragedy that weighed heavily on my heart.
I reached out and patted his arm gently, trying to offer some comfort. “Don’t let it eat you alive. Verna did encounter some trouble abroad, but Steven took care of everything. The people who hurt her didn’t get away with it, and she’s okay. From what I’ve seen, she’s as lively as ever.”
“Really? She’s okay?” Jacob’s head shot up, his tear-filled eyes wide with hope and desperation, the redness around them a testament to his sleepless nights.
I was taken aback. I had never witnessed a man cry out of worry for his girlfriend before. The depth of his love was truly something to behold.
“Yes, really,” I affirmed, trying to reassure him.
