**Between the Wings of Twilight Lies the Memory of You**
**by Liren Ava Roen**
**Chapter 179**
Good. At last, I felt an unusual sense of relief wash over me. The weight of guilt that had previously clung to my shoulders began to dissipate.
Steven’s piercing dark eyes were fixed on mine, his chiseled features exuding an intensity that was both captivating and intimidating. With a swift motion, he relinquished his grip on my throat, but his hand found its way to my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
“She is under my protection,” he stated, his voice low and menacing. “You know that, so you shouldn’t have laid a finger on her. Don’t test your luck. If I have to step in, I assure you, things will take a turn for the worse.”
My heart raced as I processed his words. “Horace’s leg is still being treated by my contacts,” he continued, a smug smile creeping onto his lips. “And guess who’s footing the bill for your Uncle Julian’s hospital expenses? If you dare to touch Verna, you should consider the consequences that will follow.”
Disbelief washed over me as I stared at him, my mind racing. How could he stoop so low? In a moment of sheer frustration, I raised my hand, aiming to slap him across the face, but he caught my wrist mid-air, halting my movement with an iron grip.
His dark eyes narrowed, a glimmer of amusement flickering within them. “Resorting to violence when you’re backed into a corner? Who instilled that bad habit in you?”
With a surge of anger, I wrenched my hand free, my breath coming in quick, uneven gasps. “You would weaponize a sick man against me? Steven, are you even capable of feeling human emotions?!”
“Is Verna not a sick patient herself?” he shot back, his tone icy. “Does that mean you can torment her without a second thought?”
“If you would just agree to the divorce, she wouldn’t have to be involved in any of this!” I retorted, desperation creeping into my voice.
“If you agree to delete the photos and refrain from causing a scandal, then Horace and your Uncle Julian will remain untouched,” he countered, his expression unyielding.
The atmosphere in the room thickened with tension, an electric charge hanging in the air. I glared at Steven, and he met my gaze with equal ferocity, both of us unwilling to retreat from this standoff.
His handsome visage was a mask of grim determination, his eyes betraying nothing but an icy resolve.
“If you delete those photos and keep Verna out of this mess, I will arrange for you to have access to the best cardiac surgeon available. Just say the word, and he can schedule the surgery right away. Weren’t you trying to get your Uncle Julian transferred? His condition is critical; he likely doesn’t have much time left. Think carefully about your choices. Do you want to force me into a divorce, or do you want to secure a doctor for your uncle?”
I felt the weight of his words settle heavily in my chest. How had I ever found him so mesmerizing in my past life? He was a monster, cornering me with no escape in sight.
