**Between the Wings of Twilight Lies the Memory of You**

*Chapter 191*

Had I ever expressed a desire to be with him? The thought lingered in my mind as Steven continued speaking, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife.

“She told me last night that your heart condition is serious and that you need to be transferred to another hospital with a better specialist. I’ve made all the arrangements. I just came to let you know.”

My hand froze on the doorknob, the cold metal biting into my palm.

Why had he taken it upon himself to handle the hospital transfer without consulting me? I thought we had mutually agreed to wait until next Tuesday.

But then again, Uncle Julian’s health was deteriorating rapidly, and time was not on our side.

Peeking into the room, I found my uncle propped up in bed, looking alarmingly pale and unwell. His rugged features, usually so full of life and vigor, were now marred by a stubbly beard that only accentuated his waning strength. His expression was grim, and his dark eyes, usually warm and inviting, now glinted with a sharpness that felt almost threatening.

“Look at you,” he spat, his voice laced with venom. “You’re all talk and no action. That mother of yours has a mouth fouler than a sewer, always targeting Zephyra. And your brother, right? He may look decent on the outside, but trust me, he has no class. He spits insults at Zephyra every chance he gets. Do you have any idea how much that girl has had to endure? Have you ever even bothered to ask her?”

A sense of indignation bubbled within me as I listened to Uncle Julian’s tirade.

“She keeps everything bottled up, only ever sharing the good news. It’s one thing for me not to know—I was far away. But not you. You’re her husband, her rock. You married her, so you should be responsible for her. But look at you! You can’t even do the bare minimum. You just stand by and watch her get bullied. A mama’s boy, is that what they call it? Now get out of my sight. Get out!”

I hesitated, a warmth spreading through my chest, a flicker of pride igniting within me.

*It’s so good to have Uncle Julian in my corner.*

Only true family would care for me like this, would worry about me with such fervor. Even though my feelings for Steven had long since faded, and I had become adept at treating him as if he were invisible, it still stung to hear such harsh truths spoken aloud.

Steven’s face remained impassive, but I could see the tension in the line of his jaw, the way his muscles tightened in response to Uncle Julian’s words. “You’re right to scold me,” he admitted, his voice low and steady.
