Only once she was gone, the locker room door shut behind her, did I let out the shaky breath I’d been holding. Hand trembling, I reached up to brush two fingers across my cheek.
It came away bloody.
My next slot of the day was a free period. I went directly to the computer lab once I’d changed and put a bandaid over my cheek. A few students were working at computers when I entered, but none looked my way as I beelined for the station in the back corner of the room.
My fingers brushed against my cheek again as I waited for the computer to boot up. I could still feel Bianca’s claw there, twisting into my skin. She’d left a small cut, but a cut nonetheless.
It wasn’t the cut I cared about, though. It was how weak I’d felt during those moments; once, I would have been able to fight off someone three times Bianca’s size with ease.
Now, I was a victim to her whims.
I needed to get my wolf back. And quickly.
I figured I might be able to find some information online, so for the next half-hour, I scoured the internet for answers. I clicked through dozens of articles and studies on missing wolves, read hundreds of forum posts, and even found an online support group for wolfless that was seemingly abandoned.
Nothing helped.
Just as I was about to give up, though, I spotted an advertisement for a local soothsayer—a witch doctor. It was on the side of a forum post about alternative medicines for returning wolves (one of those websites that sold sketchy pills, which I would definitely not be trying). I ignored it at first, but hesitated when the big, black words popped up on the image.
“Looking for answers on the matter of life, love, and all things metaphysical? Look no further! Madame Ellen is here to help.”
I frowned, watching as the phone number flashed red and black on the screen. It felt insane, but right now, maybe I needed a little insanity; so, just in case I might want it later, I jotted the number down in my notebook.
“You’re looking for witches now?” Zane perched on the edge of my desk and crossed his legs at the ankles. “Gee, for someone who was supposedly born wolfless, you’ve certainly got a fire lit under your ass all of a sudden.”
