“He does have a bleeding heart, doesn’t he? Even if he doesn’t want to admit it.” She checked her nails, as if they weren’t perfect already. “But I suppose you know that, don’t you? Who patched you up last night, hm? Surely not the school nurse.”

I glanced down at the white bandages on my hand. My palm still throbbed where I had been cut, but there was no blood seeping through. Callum had done a good job.

“I can scent him all over you, you know,” Bianca went on, leaning in. “You slept in his room, didn’t you?”

“I fainted.” I pulled my shoulders back. “He let me rest on his bed. Nothing happened.”

“Right…” Bianca’s eyes flashed dangerously. “Look, whatever you’ve got going on between you two—it won’t last. Callum is mine. He’s always been mine.”

“You say that like you weren’t the one cheating on him in a motel not long ago.”

Bianca didn’t rise to my bait. Just smiled sweetly.

“Couples go through phases. We’re young.” She shrugged one shoulder and flicked a strand of hair over it. “But once those rings are on our fingers—and they will be—he’ll forget all about you. You’ll be nothing more than a blip in his history. He won’t even bother recalling your name.”

“We’re not involved like that,” I said calmly.

“No?” Bianca tilted her head with amusement. “What are you, then? Don’t tell me you seriously think you could be friends.”

I opened my mouth to respond, but the words stuck in my throat. Truthfully, I hadn’t thought of it that way before. Friends.

Callum and I hated each other so much of the time, and yet… I couldn’t help but think back to the library, and to the night he helped me with my sprained ankle, and singing along to our favorite band in the car, and now last night. All of the memories chased away the bad ones more quickly than I expected.
