The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 202

Liora’s POV

With our arms full of whatever we could scrounge up—I had found some boxes of dried pasta, snacks, and hot chocolate under my bed from when the semester had begun—Mia and I went next door to check on Amy.

“Amy?” Mia knocked softly on the door with her free hand. “You up?”

I heard a shuffling sound coming from inside the room, and a moment later, the door opened. Amy, a tall, wolfless girl with a blonde buzzcut, stood in the doorway. Her eyes widened into saucers when she saw us standing there with our arms full of bags of food and supplies.

“What’s all this?” she asked, stepping aside to let us in.

Mia grinned as she entered the room and set her bags down on the bed. “You told me you were hungry last night, so Liora and I scrounged up whatever we could,” she said.

“I know it’s not much, but since we can’t get to the shops with the lockdown and all, it’s the best we could do,” I replied.

Amy shuffled over to the bed and peered into the bags. She pulled out the sweater Mia had picked out and held it up. “Guys, this is so sweet… But you went overboard! You didn’t have to give me your clothes!”

Mia waved her hand. “I wasn’t wearing that sweater, anyway. Besides, I noticed the one you were wearing last night had holes in it. Everyone deserves a warm sweater, especially during times like these.”

Amy nodded. “Yeah… Mr. Alder said that funding had to be redirected toward ‘security efforts’, so none of us have gotten our checks. Of course, our program was the first to go, you know?”

I blinked, surprised. This was the first I had heard of such a program. I forgot sometimes just how privileged I was; my father sent me money every month, which was more than enough to cover all of my expenses.

“Anyway,” Amy went on, “we usually get our checks at the beginning of each week, which is just enough to cover our meals in the cafeteria and a small amount of groceries. With the cafeteria closed, we’ve had to rely on the groceries we already had, so we ran out way faster than we normally would.”

“And the supply runners won’t be taking orders for the shops until tomorrow,” Mia explained.
