Amy shrugged. “Not that us wolfless can order anything. We haven’t got the money.”
“Can’t people share?” I asked, frowning. “I’ve seen some of the non-wolfless basically feasting on snacks every night since the lockdown started. At the very least, maybe we can pool up some money to chip in for a supply run.”
Amy laughed, but there was no humor in the sound. “Share? With us? Yeah, right. Some of them have even stolen from our stashes, knowing fully well that we’re going hungry. Without wolves, we’re too weak to fight back if they want to hoard all of the resources. It’s every man or woman for themselves right now, and we were already at the bottom of the pecking order before this lockdown started.”
I poked my tongue into the side of my cheek, thinking. This whole lockdown was my fault at the end of the day; it wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t here. The rogue attacks wouldn’t have started, and Bella and Marissa would still be here.
I had to do something. I couldn’t just sit idly by while Principal Alder refused to help. I should have suspected that the wolfless would be the first to suffer, especially with someone like Alder in charge, but I had gotten so wrapped up in my own little world that it never occurred to me.
Leaving Mia and Amy to chat, I returned to my room and immediately mindlinked my father.
“Father? Are you there?”
There was a long pause. I thought he wouldn’t answer, as he had been busy lately trying to handle the rogue problem, but finally, his voice came back. “Yes, dear? What is it?”
I took a deep breath and explained everything to him. When I was finished, there was another silence, and then: “I’ll deposit funding into all of the wolfless students’ accounts right away. It should be enough for two weeks of supplies.”
I let out a breath of relief. “Thank you.” I hesitated, then added, “we won’t be able to give our supply orders to the runners until tomorrow. I don’t suppose there’s any way you could send some supplies to arrive today?”
“I’ll see what I can do. Keep an eye out for drones.”
