Zane Whitaker had booked a private dining room at The Southern Harmony Hotel in advance, hosting the General Manager of the Metropolitan Investment Group and the key project executives.

His uncle at the Civic Asset Commission—Tobias's father—certainly wasn't going to attend, so Tobias came in his place.

Zane casually introduced him as his cousin, Chief Wainwright of the Economic Crimes Unit.

Everyone at the table was incredibly shrewd. In a setting like this, the surname Wainwright spoke volumes. The Deputy Secretary of the Civic Asset Commission was a Wainwright, and he controlled personnel appointments.

Want a promotion? He had to sign off on it.

Zane had orchestrated the gathering, but the business ultimately belonged to Vance Properties. Elara knew her role well; she stood up, offered a toast, and downed a full glass of Baijiu without hesitation.

Zane's heart ached watching her. He tried to interject and run interference, while Tobias shot him a knowing glance. Raising his own glass, Tobias smiled, "Ms. Vance, the sentiment is more than enough."

Midway through the dinner, the owner of The Southern Harmony Hotel stopped by to offer a toast.

Southern Harmony was a prestigious establishment in Eastford. With a father serving as a provincial department director and a mother who was a successful entrepreneur, none of the executives in the room dared to disrespect the owner.

Elara stood up and politely returned the toast.

At that moment, Elara could only marvel at Zane's deep-rooted network in Eastford. She hadn't realized that she would later encounter this same owner, Landon North, at her sister's wedding—or that Landon was actually former classmates with Gideon Grant.

Seeing Elara down several more glasses of Baijiu, Zane frowned slightly. He discreetly signaled Tobias and texted him: *Tell Landon to send in some watered-down liquor.*

Tobias smoothly escorted Landon North out of the room.

Outside the door, Landon chuckled. "What can I do for you, Chief Wainwright?"

"My cousin can't hold his liquor," Tobias said. "I'm afraid if he gets too drunk, he won't be able to play the hero and save the damsel in distress."

Tobias thought to himself that Zane had gone through an awful lot of trouble—there was no way this was just about some old school ties.

Landon nodded in understanding. "Do you need any for yourself?"

"No need. My wife finally got to go on a business trip. Her department rarely travels, so she was thrilled. She won't be checking up on me tonight."

Landon smiled knowingly. "My wife is visiting her parents too. How about after this wraps up, I set something up and we grab some drinks?"

"Deal," Tobias agreed instantly.
