Elara was so swamped with the MIG retirement project that she barely had a second to breathe.
As a result, she skipped several joint meetings between the two companies.
Zane's lovesickness flared up again. Desperate, he called Dominic.
Forced into playing the middleman, Dominic called Elara, claiming he was suddenly interested in developing high-end serviced apartments and wanted an update on the preliminary paperwork.
Hearing this, Elara immediately replied, "Whenever you're free, Dominic. I'll bring the files over."
"Let's grab lunch today with Zane and discuss it," Dominic suggested.
In reality, Dominic's original conversation with Zane had gone more like: "Zane, it's Monday. Don't you have a company to run?"
To which Zane had smoothly replied, "This is work, isn't it?"
When Elara heard Zane was attending, her first thought was relief. Having him mediate the deal would be highly beneficial.
But then she remembered the embarrassing incident in his hotel room, and dread crept in. It was going to be painfully awkward.
Elara almost wished it had just been a one-night stand. At least with a one-night stand, they could pretend they didn't know each other and never cross paths again.
But Zane was the client. This professional dynamic had to survive until the acquisition was complete.
If he injected capital instead, they would be tied together indefinitely.
Zane successfully ambushed Elara at Dominic's restaurant.
"Good to see you, Elara," Zane greeted smoothly as he approached.
"Good afternoon, Zane. Dominic."
Watching their painfully formal exchange, Dominic shot Zane a knowing look. You've got a long way to go, buddy.
Unfazed, Zane gestured inside. "Let's head in, Elara. We can talk while we eat."
Dominic suppressed a smile. The business talk was clearly secondary to just sitting at a table with her.
However, while Zane was just there to stare, Elara was fully committed to the business pitch. Knowing he couldn't completely waste her time, Dominic engaged her in a serious professional discussion.
Even though high-end serviced apartments weren't his core focus, business principles were universal. Zane chimed in, and eventually, the three of them moved from the dining table straight into a conference room.
The project belonged to Elara and Dominic. Zane was entirely redundant, yet he stayed until the sun went down. Elara felt a deep sense of gratitude, mixed with a lingering fear of being left alone with him.
She thanked them profusely before finally leaving. Zane didn't even get the chance to walk her to her car.
As her car pulled away, Dominic leaned against the doorway and looked at Zane. "She seems to be avoiding you."
