Zane felt like a caged animal, desperately wanting to ditch his table and barge into Elara's private dining room.
But with the elders present, he had no choice but to sit there and behave.
Arthur Neville was visibly impressed with Zane, and the conversation flowed smoothly throughout the meal.
Zane suffered through the endless dinner, unable to slip away.
After finally seeing the Nevilles off, Zane pretended he needed the restroom and rushed to the front desk, only to be told that Ms. Vance had already left.
Disappointed, he trudged back to his car.
"Zane," Elena began, "I think Nadia is a wonderful girl. Excellent family background, beautiful, and Arthur Neville is clearly very fond of you."
Zane immediately pushed back. "She's never been married, and I'm divorced. Don't you think we're forcing this a bit too hard, Mom?"
"My son is the heir to the Whitaker Group. Your abilities are unmatched, and you're one of the most eligible men in the city. So what if you're divorced?"
"The rumors say I'm infertile, Mom. The Nevilles definitely know that too. Don't you find their eagerness a little suspicious?"
"What's suspicious about it? That's just a vicious rumor your ex-wife started!" Elena snapped. "This is what happens when you let her walk all over you."
In Zane's eyes, Jocelyn was definitely fiery and arrogant, but she wasn't a bad person.
"Mom, we're already divorced. Leave her out of this. I'm just saying, with them pushing so hard, it makes me wonder if they're looking for a convenient father."
Elena glared at him. "You're a grown man. Stop saying such ridiculous things."
Knowing he was just talking nonsense to stall, Zane pleaded, "Mom, I don't like her. I feel absolutely nothing. I'd honestly rather just get back together with Jocelyn."
"You always use her as an excuse."
"She's single, I'm single. It's the most stress-free option."
"Absolutely not. I forbid it. You two did nothing but scream at each other and drag the entire extended family into your drama. Just thinking about it gives me a headache. Stop being so difficult."
