Elara was fully immersed in her own world, paying zero attention to her pending divorce or the lingering awkwardness with Zane.
Watching Zane mope around the office like a discarded concubine on the verge of madness, Jasper felt absolutely no sympathy. He just thought his boss was being pathetic.
"Jocelyn ignored me for days on end, and I never acted like this."
Resting his chin on his hand, Zane stared blankly at the stock market tickers on his monitor, completely unresponsive.
The only way he could even see Elara right now was by dragging Dominic into his schemes.
Her total indifference was breaking his heart.
Zane let out a heavy sigh. "If I don't initiate contact, she never reaches out. She doesn't care about me at all."
Jasper rolled his eyes. "She has a husband. Why exactly should she care about you?"
"She's fighting a war with her ex, and you think she has time to daydream about you?"
Zane had no comeback for that.
"Stop acting like it's the end of the world. The Chairman is asking for you. Get upstairs."
Zane finally stood up. Pausing at the door, he sighed dramatically. "There are thousands of ailments in this world, but lovesickness is the only one without a cure."
"You're just bored out of your skull," Jasper shot back. "Go chop some wood or something. That'll cure you real quick."

When Zane reached the executive suite, he assumed it was about work. Instead, his father asked, "What are your thoughts on Arthur Neville's niece?"
Zane dodged the question. "Did Mom send you to ask me this?"
"I'm the one asking."
"I don't have any thoughts. I don't care. If you think she's so great, I'll just go remarry Jocelyn."
Warren wasn't easily bluffed. He scoffed, "Go ahead. Marry her again."
Choking on his words, Zane didn't dare push the bluff further.
Satisfied that his son had backed down, Warren gestured. "Have a seat."
