Leaving the government compound, Elara drove toward the Vance Estate. Stopped at a red light, she noticed the gift bag sitting on the back seat and reached over to grab it.

She wanted to see what was inside.

Just as she pulled the pristine box out of the bag, the light turned green. Elara casually tossed it onto the passenger seat and hit the gas.

She assumed it was probably bird's nest or expensive skincare. She hated eating bird's nest and was entirely loyal to one specific cosmetics brand, so she figured she'd just give it to her mother.

As soon as she pulled into the Vance Estate, her phone rang.

It was Julian's sister, Isabella.

"Elara."

Elara didn't offer a greeting, getting straight to the point. "What is it?"

"Julian..."

"Elara, Julian hasn't smiled since you left. He's incredibly drunk again tonight. Can you please come see him?"

Elara let her finish before responding flatly. "If he's drunk, tell him to go to sleep."

"Elara—"

"I'm not a hangover cure. Take care of him yourself. Goodbye."

She hung up immediately.

She had nothing but contempt for Julian's refusal to legally divide their assets and had zero patience for his performative heartbreak.

If he were actually a good man, he wouldn't have treated her so callously, spitting the most venomous insults at her with zero dignity.

Honestly, she was slightly jealous of Jocelyn. Jocelyn had a fantastic ex-husband.

A man who handled their divorce with grace, and who still treated her wonderfully and respectfully long after they split.

The next morning, Zane was heading out immediately after his morning meeting.

"Where are you going, Boss?"

"Where do you think? I have to go clean up your sister's mess." Zane stepped into the elevator, looking thoroughly exhausted.

Jasper shrank back, wisely keeping his mouth shut.

They were in the same boat; if she went down, he went down. The only reason he got to coast through his job working for Zane was because his sister was always on the front lines, fighting their battles.

Zane called in every favor he had to smooth over Jocelyn's incident.

If he didn't handle that city official properly, it was going to cause endless problems down the line.
