Aaron was already preparing the tea, so it arrived almost immediately. Zane casually pushed the office door shut.

He had been desperately hoping Elara would rush over and hug him, or at least offer a kiss.

Instead, she simply gestured. "Mr. Whitaker, please have a seat."

Zane had no choice but to sit down on the sofa.

For the past two days, he had been drinking so heavily that Jasper had to drag him home completely wasted. He hadn't been in any condition to call her.

But he had expected her to call him. She never did.

He waited two more days, hoping she'd take the initiative. Still nothing.

Zane felt crushed.

He felt like an abandoned puppy.

"Why didn't you call me?" The words slipped out before he could stop them.

Elara paused, genuinely confused. Why would she call him?

But she couldn't say that, so she offered a polite excuse. "I've been incredibly busy these past few days."

Hearing that she was just busy instantly repaired Zane's fragile ego.

"I've been slammed too."

"Jocelyn hit a city official, and I had to leverage all my connections to bury it."

"Since we used to be married, I couldn't just stand by and watch her ruin herself, or let it damage the company."

She only said one word about being busy, and Zane immediately started listing his entire itinerary.

He desperately wanted to explain why he hadn't called, why he was still dealing with his ex-wife, and most importantly, he wanted to make sure she wasn't mad at him.

Unfortunately, Elara couldn't have cared less. His schedule was his own business; she had no right to interfere.
