Elena Whitaker slammed the phone down in a huff. "He's completely out of line. Running off to clean up Jocelyn's messes again, but refusing to do a single productive thing with his life."
Warren Whitaker, already aware of the situation, wrapped a comforting arm around his wife's shoulders. "Zane takes after you. He has a good heart. Just let him be."
"How can I just let him be? He and Jocelyn are a terrible match. I never agreed to that marriage in the first place."
"And what happened?" Warren countered. "Nobody even had to break them up. They tore the marriage apart themselves!"
"Don't worry about him," Warren added. "If he really wanted to get back together with her, he would have done it a long time ago."
"He might know what he wants, but anyone can see that Jocelyn is desperate to reconcile. I'm just terrified he's going to soften up."
"If it really comes to that, then it's his fate. Honestly, I'm more worried that he has his sights set on something else entirely."
"Like what?"
Warren hesitated, opting for diplomacy. "Like another man's wife."
"Who? Isn't that utterly depraved?!"
"I'm just speaking hypothetically," Warren said.
Vance Properties was bringing in decent profits, but the risks were astronomically high. Acquiring it was already a massive gamble.
Yet their son was absolutely hell-bent on a massive capital injection, and there had to be a reason.
Looking at it through the lens of pure logic and financial data, Warren couldn't find a single viable reason to justify the investment—unless, of course, Zane had fallen for the head of Vance Properties, the eldest Vance daughter.
When logic surrendered to love, a man's hero complex tended to explode, leaving him blindly committed, regardless of the cost.
Elena let out a heavy sigh. "Honestly, obsessing over another man's wife might actually be better. At least it's a woman! He spends every day messing around with those... things. Can a toy give him children? Are we really that desperate for a daughter-in-law?"
Warren patted her arm to comfort her. "I'll have a talk with him later."
"And Sebastian!" she muttered. "Such a good boy, but he's always getting dragged into Zane's ridiculous antics."
As Elena continued to grumble, Warren pulled her close and coaxed, "Stop worrying yourself sick over him. He's a grown man; he knows where to draw the line."
