Zane turned his head and froze.

The heavy front door was still wide open.

He looked back at the woman in his arms. His Adam's apple bobbed. Her lips were kissed a swollen, glossy red.

Zane slowly released Elara. He knew that if he kept acting like an unhinged animal, she would absolutely end his bloodline right then and there.

Clearing his throat, he stepped over and shut the door.

He cursed himself silently. Why had he been so impatient? It was completely... undignified.

Elara stepped out of her high heels and asked softly, "Mr. Whitaker, could you keep a spare pair of slippers here for me?"

He had completely swapped out the toiletries in the guest bathroom for her; how could he have forgotten something as basic as slippers?

He had just been desperately looking for an excuse to knock on her bedroom door.

"Of course. I'll have someone drop them off tomorrow." Zane's gaze couldn't help but drift back to her slightly bruised lips. He had done that.

"What brand do you prefer?"

They were just slippers. "Whatever works," Elara replied.

"Do you have a favorite color?" Zane pressed.

Elara looked at him, slightly confused. She was just a guest. She'd wear them occasionally, and Jocelyn Yale could probably use them when she visited, too.

So, she simply said, "Anything is fine."

Zane nodded, mentally noting that he was going to pick out the most gorgeous pairs money could buy tomorrow.

When their eyes met, the reality of what they were about to do tonight settled over them. The air grew thick with silence, and just a hint of awkwardness.

The awkwardness was entirely on Elara's end. She felt like she was just there to fulfill a transactional physical need.

Zane, on the other hand, didn't feel awkward at all. He was bursting with anticipation.

Actually...

He was practically dying of impatience.

"Have a seat. I'll go open a bottle of wine."
