Zane hissed, "Stop moving. That was my mother back there. And Mrs. Prescott."

Mrs. Prescott was Xavier's mother, making her Julian's aunt by association. She would definitely recognize Elara. Hearing this, Elara instantly froze and kept her mouth shut.

Since Elara had been gone for so long, Julian had stepped out to look for her.

"Jocelyn, go walk Zane out," her mother ordered.

"Why should I? He's just here for dinner like the rest of us," Jocelyn muttered testily.

Despite her grumbling, she followed him out into the hall anyway, clearly having something to say.

"So, what is it? Bennett looking for you?"

"It's perfectly normal for him to look for me," Zane replied casually. "I was just heading over. You should go back and eat."

Jocelyn scoffed. "As the saying goes, you can't save a fool who's determined to drown. Just make sure you don't end up playing stepdaddy to some other guy's kid. That's all I'm going to say. Get out of here."

Afraid that saying too much would give him away, Zane beat a hasty retreat.

The hallway was dimly lit with ambient lighting, so Jocelyn hadn't noticed anything off about Zane's appearance.

But when Elara returned to the brightly lit dining room with Julian, it took him only one glance to spot the issue.
