Zane Whitaker caught a cold and came down with a fever.

Unwilling to take care of him, Jasper Yale shipped him right back to the Whitaker Manor.

When Zane's mother, Eleanor Whitaker, asked how he got sick, Jasper immediately said it was from the cold. He subtly threw Zane under the bus, claiming his "boss" refused to wear a coat.

Eleanor began to nag him relentlessly. She recited the old saying about bundling up in spring and braving the cold in autumn, scolding him for lacking basic common sense at over thirty years old.

She went from harping on his lack of clothing to complaining that a man simply couldn't function without a wife.

Zane hated this topic more than anything. He immediately countered, "Fine, then I'll just remarry Jocelyn."

That instantly shut Eleanor up.

When Zane and Jocelyn had been married, they lived at the manor and bickered incessantly, from minor spats to full-blown wars. Eleanor had eventually forced them to move out.

As a result, without the elders there to keep the peace, they fought all the way to a divorce.

Perhaps some people were just naturally incompatible. They were both alpha personalities who refused to submit to anyone. Even if they remarried, they would just divorce again.

Having lived most of her life, how could she not see that?

So the moment her son mentioned remarrying, she didn't dare say another word, terrified he actually would get back with his ex-wife.

Once he recovered, Zane wanted to see Elara. Desperately. But he didn't want to see her in a crowded conference room.

He wanted to ask her out, but he had far too many concerns.

To her, he was just a high-level corporate executive, a distant university alumnus. Asking her out to dinner for no reason would make it obvious he had ulterior motives.

Moreover, she was married. She was still Mrs. Sterling, and he was terrified of inviting scandalous gossip that would tarnish her reputation.

Because of all this, Zane practically built an entire banquet around a single excuse, taking a massive detour just to set up a dinner gathering.

The venue was set at a place in the suburbs, the Willow Creek Estate.

Zane initially wanted to invite the top tycoons of the real estate sector, but fearing Elara might find another backer to acquire Vance Properties, he deliberately lowered the criteria.
