"What do you mean 'no need'? She's been married to you all these years, managing this household. Even if she hasn't achieved anything grand, she's put in the hard work. She has done right by this family and by you."

Hearing his mother say that, Julian’s expression darkened instantly.

Done right by him?

What did it mean to 'do right by him'?

Spending money to find a man and cuckold him?

If she had even a sliver of him or this family in her heart, she wouldn't have been so ruthless, backing their marriage into a dead end.

"Mom, the Vance family is a sinking ship, ready to collapse at any moment. Even she isn't afraid, so what are you worrying about?"

"Julian, how can you speak like that?" Sienna scolded sharply. "As a man, you must understand responsibility. You have responsibilities to the company, and you must be responsible for her, too."

"Even though business is business, Elara has never blamed you for standing by and watching her family struggle. She met all the standards of a good wife and a good daughter-in-law, and you should compromise when necessary. She isn't your employee."

A good wife?

A cheating 'good wife'?

Julian stood up abruptly in sheer frustration, but his upbringing wouldn't allow him to be so undisciplined. He forced himself back down, swallowing the roiling emotions, and said quietly, "Mom, a good wife shouldn't be this willful, walking out to stay at her parents' house and completely disregarding her marriage."

"I'm going upstairs to rest." With that, Julian headed straight upstairs.

Isabella watched her brother, her brows knitting into a deep frown.

"Mom, what are they even fighting about?"

Mentioning it made Sienna irritated. "It’s your aunt's family; they're nothing but trouble. Arthur got drunk and had some filthy dispute with your sister-in-law's younger sister, which ended up dragging everyone into the police station. Your sister-in-law is furious that your brother didn't intervene."

Isabella stayed quiet. Everyone knew what kind of person Arthur Thorne was, and her sister-in-law should have known better than to make such a huge scene and move back home over something like that. She suspected there had to be more to the story.

Sienna looked at her romantically doomed, obstinate daughter and felt a headache coming on.

Then she thought of her stubborn, unyielding son upstairs, and her heart ached even more. Her children were grown, and she could no longer control them.

She used to only worry about her daughter’s marriage, but now she had to stress over both of them. It felt harder than managing a corporation.

At this moment, Julian didn't think Elara could actually pull any real stunts. He believed she was merely acting out of spite, engaging in a cycle of mutual hurt.
