The moment Xavier spoke, the Prescott family summit ground to a halt. The two people supposedly on the brink of divorce suddenly had nothing to say.

Catherine smiled, smoothing things over. "Well, since no one is actually getting divorced, I'll invite Elena and Warren over tonight. Both our families can sit down and have a nice dinner."

At dinner that evening, when Zane saw Beatrice pull out several familiar-looking shopping bags, a cold dread washed over him.

Olivia Beck smiled in curiosity. "What are these? There aren't any labels or names on them."

Beatrice beamed. "Trust me, they're fantastic. I promise you'll love them."

Zane watched her hand two more gift boxes to his aunts, shooting Xavier a look of pure helplessness.

"Do you have any idea what's in those boxes?" Zane asked.

"I didn't before, but now that you're asking, I've got a pretty good guess," Xavier replied.

Zane kept his face neutral, covering his mouth. "You used to blame me, but seeing her here in Eastford, I feel like she's completely let loose."

Xavier facepalmed, dragging his hand down his face. Sometimes he genuinely felt sorry for his dad.

Silas Prescott knew exactly what kind of gifts his wife was handing out, considering they had screamed at each other over these exact items several times before.

They had literally fought over these specific gifts that very morning, but his wife never listened. She did whatever she pleased.

Before they left the house, Xavier had tried to mediate. "Dad, if you wanted a gentle, traditional wife, you never should have married Mom."

Silas's expression had been thunderous. "I was deceived by your mother back then."

"Then Mom is a genius, keeping up the act for over thirty years."

"I only did it so you'd have a stable home growing up."

Xavier stared at his defeated father in amusement. "Dad, do you actually believe the words coming out of your mouth?"

Looking at his father beside him, and then across the room at his fiercely independent mother, Xavier could only think of one phrase: a powerless husband and a wildly insubordinate wife.
