Zane walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. He leaned down, inhaling the sweet scent of her neck. "You smell amazing."
Elara caught the scent of alcohol on him. "You've been drinking?"
"Yeah," he murmured. "Both sides of the family were there, so I had a few."
"What do you mean, both sides of the family?"
Zane explained softly, "My mom and Beatrice grew up together. The Wainwrights and the Prescotts are tied by marriage."
"Tobias's mother is Beatrice's cousin, and my mother's cousin married Beatrice's cousin. It's a very tangled family tree."
Elara frowned at his reflection in the mirror. He had explained it, but she was still completely lost.
Zane laughed. "The short version is, the Wainwrights and the Prescotts swapped brides. Their sisters married each other's brothers."
"Oh." That made sense to her.
They had slept away the entire day and gone out to dinner, and she hadn't seen him touch a single piece of work. "Did you come to Eastford for business?" she asked.
"Not really," Zane admitted, seeing no point in hiding it. "My mother is terrified of consequences but loves to cause trouble. Last night, she and Beatrice hired a bunch of male escorts at a hotel, and they got caught in a vice raid."
"The hotel went into lockdown because of that attacker, and since Chief Beck and the other officials know our families, they called the elders. Now the whole family knows."
"She was supposed to face the family's wrath, but my dad is completely powerless against her. So, her punishment ended up being absolutely nothing."
Elara suppressed a smile. "Did Silas show up?"
"Oh, he showed up," Zane laughed. "Xavier told his parents to just get a divorce so they could stop ruining each other's lives. Silas and Beatrice called a truce immediately."
"Xavier really knows how to handle them."
"Mostly it's just my dad being a pushover. I had no room to pull a stunt like that," Zane chuckled. The memory of the dinner sparked another thought. "My mom and Beatrice actually came down for a wedding. Guess whose?"
Elara shook her head.
