Elara hadn't come to see him after returning from her business trip.

Zane was feeling thoroughly miserable.

He had assumed she would definitely seek him out the very next day.

Unfortunately, hopes were meant to be dashed.

She hadn't come to see him. She hadn't even called.

Zane waited from morning until night, his anticipation souring into disappointment, and finally curdling into outright annoyance.

It felt like she never initiated anything between them. He felt less like a partner and more like a clandestine lover kept hidden in the shadows.

Jasper Yale easily guessed the source of his foul mood and teased him mercilessly. "Oh? Is your lovely lady ignoring you?"

Zane refused to acknowledge it, as if admitting it would make the humiliation a concrete fact.

"I have other plans tonight."

"Please, as if I don't know your schedule inside out," Jasper scoffed, instantly calling his bluff.

"Who is the boss here? You or me?" Zane snapped.

Jasper snorted. "I heard from the project department this morning that President Vance is back in town. You're lingering at the office simply because she's giving you the cold shoulder."

"Can you learn to read the room? You have an incredible knack for saying exactly what your boss doesn't want to hear."

"I don't see you as my boss," Jasper replied smoothly. "I just see you as my future brother-in-law."

"In your dreams."

Feeling thoroughly aggravated, Zane drove himself straight back to The Sovereign.

He pulled into his parking spot but found himself completely unwilling to go upstairs. Instead, he grabbed the keys to his sports car and aimlessly cruised the city streets.

It wasn't hard to guess where he eventually ended up. He parked the sleek car right next to Elara's vehicle in the garage and just sat there, waiting in the driver's seat.

It was incredibly late by the time she finally came downstairs.

The sheer volume of her workload offered him a shred of comfort.

It wasn't that she didn't want to see him; she was simply swamped. It just went to show that someone who loved you would always find a perfectly reasonable excuse on your behalf.

Because Zane usually drove his black S680, Elara completely overlooked the flashy sports car parked beside hers.

Zane hurried out and pulled open the passenger door of her car.

Given the late hour, the sudden movement startled Elara.

"Why didn't you text me to say you were here?"
