Beatrice quickly stepped in. "Your mother and I were just out for a stroll and ended up in the neighborhood. We figured we'd pop up for a glass of water. We certainly didn't expect to walk in on... this."
"But since we're already here, there's no time like the present. Come on, Zion, bring her out to say hello."
It was an incredibly weak excuse, everyone knew full well they had come to catch him red-handed.
Zane laughed effortlessly. "Beatrice, I promise I'm not trying to be difficult. But considering what you clearly interrupted, she's utterly exhausted. It's really not a good time."
Elena felt totally useless. Her son was the one who had been caught in a compromising position, so why did she feel like she was the one losing the argument?
"Zion, stop talking in circles," Elena demanded. "Tell her to come out right now."
Zane ignored the demand entirely. "Mom, it's getting late. You and Beatrice should really be heading home."
"Let the girl come out and say a quick hello, and then we'll leave," Elena bargained.
Beatrice secretly flashed her a thumbs-up.
But Zane was used to managing a massive corporation and handling ruthless executives on a daily basis. Outmaneuvering his own mother was child's play.
He took a slight step back and looked his mother dead in the eye. "Mom, she's in that room sleeping. You walk in there tonight, and I'll march her down to the courthouse tomorrow and marry her. Without a prenup."
Hearing that, Beatrice instantly knew it was game over. They'd lost.
Sure enough, Zane had hit Elena right where it hurt.
His first marriage had ended in a spectacular failure. Her greatest fear was that he would make another impulsive, reckless decision and jump into a second disaster. People rarely got endless second chances in life!
Zane knew his mother's hesitation stemmed entirely from her love for him.
Softening his tone, he coaxed, "Mom, what are you so worried about? It's not like I'm into men."
