Elena snapped back to reality. Beatrice was right, why should she be the one running?

Beatrice deliberately raised her voice. "You were so worried about Zion not finding a girlfriend. I guess you can put those fears to rest now, huh?"

"These kids today are just wild. When the mood strikes, they simply can't wait."

Staring at the tightly shut bedroom door, Elena felt a sudden surge of indignation. "Zion!" she yelled. "What are you dawdling for? Get out here this instant!"

Inside, Zane had managed to throw on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. He watched Elara scrambling to dress herself and said, "Take your time. Let them stand out there."

Elara ignored him, her fingers fumbling as she hastily pulled her clothes on.

Zane stepped closer and gently grasped her hands. Looking deep into her eyes, he asked, "Do you actually want to go out there tonight?"

Of course, Elara didn't want to go out there. Walking into such a humiliating situation, especially with Xavier's mother present, sounded like a nightmare. She shook her head helplessly.

"Then you don't have to," Zane said firmly. "I'll go out in a minute. You stay right here in the bedroom. I'll handle them out there; they won't dare barge in."

"Are you sure that's going to work?" Elara whispered.

"Why wouldn't it? It's not a big deal. Don't worry about a thing, just lie down and get some sleep."

Zane turned to head out, but paused at the door as something occurred to him. "Did you drive here tonight?"

Elara shook her head. She hadn't brought her car, knowing Zane would insist on dropping her off at work in the morning. If she had driven, he would have had to take a cab to his office.

"My good girl. Perfect," Zane praised softly. He flicked off the main overhead light and pulled the door open.

Striding into the living room, Zane greeted them with casual confidence. "Mom. Beatrice. What brings you two here without a heads-up?"

Elena cleared her throat awkwardly. "And say what? Give you a warning so you could make a run for it?"

"Mom, this is my apartment. Where exactly would I run to?" Zane chuckled.

Beatrice nudged her friend, silently urging her to cut the small talk and get to the point.
