"You know exactly why I'm here, Mom," Zane replied evenly.

Elena let out a sharp scoff. "Why should I know? Is your beautiful Daisy throwing a tantrum?"

That morning, she and Beatrice had rehashed the entire debacle. Elena was convinced she simply hadn't brought her A-game the night before.

She had been utterly pathetic, completely outplayed and steamrolled by her own son.

Consequently, she was in a terrible mood today.

Zane smiled easily. "My Daisy isn't mad at all. I was just worried that you might be upset over losing your edge yesterday, so I came back to check on you."

Elena flushed, furious that her son had read her so easily. "I don't need you checking on me! Just wait until your father gets home. I'm having him deal with you immediately."

"Mom, there's no need to drag Dad into something so embarrassing."

Elena glared daggers at him. "Why should I be embarrassed? I just didn't perform well under pressure! You're the one who should be ashamed!"

"Of course," Zane placated her gently. "I meant I'd be embarrassed."

"Come on, Mom. Stop stressing over it. Getting angry is just going to give you wrinkles. I already had the chef prepare all your favorites. Dinner will be out in a minute."

After a few more sweet words from her son, Elena finally let her guard down, and the incident was seemingly brushed under the rug.

However, Beatrice's horrifying theories from the night before still weighed heavily on her mind. Unable to help herself, Elena blurted out, "Is your Daisy... physically healthy?"

Zane frowned in confusion. "What kind of question is that?"

His mind instantly jumped to the fact that Elara hadn't been able to conceive during her marriage. Examining his mother's expression, he lowered his gaze and said, "Didn't you tell me not to get any innocent girls pregnant?"

"Who asked if she could have babies? I'm asking if her arms and legs work! I draw the line at missing limbs, Zane. I won't accept a cripple."
