Julian Sterling was currently living in a state of perpetual agony, relentlessly harassed by Vanessa Quinn until he felt like he was losing his mind.
Vanessa had one unyielding demand: marry her, or she was getting an abortion.
That was the one thing Julian absolutely could not do.
After dragging it out for so long, Vanessa had finally accepted the harsh reality that Julian was never going to make her his wife.
She had wildly underestimated the situation. Since he had no control over his own marriage, she pivoted to her backup plan: demanding a massive payout.
Unfortunately for her, she had missed the optimal window to cash in.
Julian used to have liquid assets, but Elara had ruthlessly backed him into a corner, forcing him to drain his accounts just to pay off half of what he owed her.
Then, when Elara refused to settle and pushed forward with the lawsuit, he had been forced to beg and borrow from every connection he had to scrape together the rest of the payment.
In a moment of blind stupidity, he had signed that disastrous contract, and terrified of his family finding out, he'd kept the entire mess a secret. He was desperately shuffling funds around and liquidating his private, small-scale investments just to pay off his staggering debts.
So when Vanessa came looking for a payout, his pockets were completely empty.
He could have tried borrowing the money for her, but the astronomical sum she demanded was impossible. Out of options, Julian had tactfully approached his mother, asking for a small advance just to keep Vanessa placated until the baby was born.
But Sienna Carter was immovable. There would be absolutely no money until a paternity test proved the child was a Sterling.
Pushed to the brink, Julian finally laid his cards on the table. "I don't have that kind of cash. I can give you ten percent now, and we'll figure out the rest later."
Vanessa was furious. She immediately assumed Julian was either hoarding the money or that he genuinely believed she was only worth ten percent of her asking price.
"You either marry me, or you pay me," she sneered. "You don't get to keep your money and get exactly what you want. The world doesn't work that way, Julian."
The fact that Julian hadn't once suggested she terminate the pregnancy told Vanessa everything she needed to know: he was desperate for this child.
