After the New Year holidays concluded, Vance Properties and the Silver Lining Initiative in Eastford entered the critical contract-signing phase.
Elara was drowning in work, spending the better part of a month relentlessly commuting between the two cities.
Meanwhile, Zane was swamped managing the Northside redevelopment project while simultaneously playing a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with Mrs. Lowery. By sheer necessity, he was forced into honoring his promise to give Elara a year of space.
Elara practically lived at her office. Zane considered himself lucky if he could steal thirty minutes to eat lunch with her.
Most of the time, he resorted to bringing takeout straight to her desk.
But even that was an operational nightmare. Her entire executive team was right outside her door. As the CEO of the company currently buying them out, Zane's constant presence looked highly suspicious—especially since Elara was technically still a married woman.
Mrs. Lowery continued to push his boundaries, testing the waters with increasing boldness.
Zane saw exactly what she was doing, but since her political connections were still useful, he played along, expertly dodging her advances without shutting the door completely.
Before they knew it, the first month of the new year had evaporated.
Zane assumed her workload would lighten, but Elara only grew busier.
She told him Vivian had injured her leg and needed someone to look after her.
Zane stared at his phone, his expression incredibly dark. "You're working yourself to the bone. If she needs a nurse, I'll hire the best professional care money can buy."
"It's fine. She's not even staying at the estate right now."
"Then where is she? Give me the address. I'll send a care team."
"It's really not necessary. It's just a minor injury, and she's practically fully recovered anyway."
"Someone still needs to keep an eye on her. Where is she staying?"
Elara hesitated. "Probably at Gideon's place."
Zane blinked.
"Did they get back together?" he asked cautiously.
"I think so."
The thunderclouds instantly vanished from Zane's face. Well, he thought smugly, maybe Gideon wasn't completely useless after all.
"If Vivian likes him, just let it play out. Stop stressing yourself out over her."
Elara couldn't help but worry about her younger sister, but she also knew this wasn't something she could control.
