Zane quickly suppressed the surge of joy in his chest.

"Mr. Whitaker—"

"Shh!" Zane pressed a finger to his lips. "Keep your voice down."

Seeing his tense reaction, Elara panicked slightly and dropped her voice to a whisper. "W-what's wrong?"

Zane leaned in, covering his mouth to murmur, "My ex-wife is out there chatting with Julian."

Hmm?

Why did that matter?

Jocelyn’s younger sister had married the son of Julian's aunt; they were technically family and naturally knew each other.

Elara didn't understand the issue.

Zane leaned closer to her ear and whispered the explanation, "My ex-wife always chases me down just to yell at me. I ducked in here to hide from her."

Elara looked at him, surprised.

She and Julian weren't even officially divorced yet, but he had already cut her off from every ounce of his leverage and power. Whenever they were alone, he hurled the most vicious, degrading words at her.

It was as if there was a blood feud between them.

Yet Zane, a man actually divorced, still treated his ex-wife with such a mild, almost humorous gentleness.

It was true what they said—you only saw a person's true character during a divorce.

He really was a good man. Gentle, decent, and dignified.

"What about you? Why are you hiding back here?" Zane asked softly.

Elara wanted to offer some grand, dignified excuse to save face, but as the words reached her tongue, they melted into a bitter smile.

They both lived in the same elite circles; trying to lie to him was just fooling herself.

"Just a bit tired. Stealing a moment of peace."

In this secluded corner of the traditional courtyard, the spring sun was bright and brilliant. A single ray of light filtered through the canopy of leaves, landing perfectly on the edge of her ear.

Her pale earlobe looked almost translucent in the sunlight, with a few stray strands of dark hair resting gently against her neck. Suddenly, Zane’s mouth went completely dry.

His Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily.

A faint fragrance drifted into his senses. For a moment, he couldn't tell if it was the scent of the blooming trees or the natural perfume of her skin.

"Julian isn't very considerate, is he?" he remarked.
